Kind of an odd experience.

First, let me say: Yes the rat was prekilled. Yes I used tongs (even if they're a bit on the short side.)

Well, yeah, I bought another rat to feed to that Anaconda I picked up. And, if you read the last thread, you might remember me mentioning that guy who owns multiple anacondas who literally hand feeds them: He holds the rat by the tail and the Anaconda just mouths its way up the rat.

Well, I was dangling the rat infront of it.

He struck at it, but it seemed more like a defensive strike -- he let go immediately.

Well, I dangled it for a few more seconds and suddenly, he took the head in his mouth and just started working up it. Never even attempted to constrict it.

Of course I let go soon after and he continued to eat it.

Do Anacondas eat dead stuff in the wild? My other snakes all constrict their prey, regardless of whether or not it's alive or dead.

Not every snake will try to constrict pre-killed prey. Some will just swallow others wills try to kill the dead mouse. It's normal for them to do things different sometimes.

Many snakes are opportunistic hunters. They will consume dead prey if they come across it - I've seen western diamondbacks and texas rat snakes trying to pry long-dead roadkill off the highway.

Neither of my anacondas constrict, and I always feed thawed.
