Paper towels, sponges and the such are great breeding grounds for molds and fungi.. Not a good thing !
I use "Flukers" Cricket quencher.. Works very well! Crickets will drown themselves in a water tub..unless you put a pebble substrate in it. ( fresh water aquarium pebbles do work) I've read you don't need water if you put some form of food that has a water base, Such as apple chunks, fruit, Etc. they get their needed water intake supply from it along with their food nutrition.. I'm going to give it a try myself right away ( when the Quencher almost runs out)
The cricket food is nothing more then Chicken layer mash, Ground very fine. Something all of us cricket feeders can use and grind ourselves to save money.

Apples, oranges, potatoes seem to keep them going fine for me...
Paper towel work well also, I drape them over the 'egg carton' stuff and spritz then every say. They dry out quickly...

Yeah, the water crystals work great. They're essentially the same thing as the Fluker's product, just not re-hydrated. It's amazing how much the crystals puff up when you add water. Plus, they're a way better deal, since so little makes so much.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are good enough to keep your crixs properly watered.

Just add a big, wide, deep water dish and keep it filled.

Ok...they took my idea. I admit it

water

Water crytals are the same thing that you find in pet stores but much cheaper and they work great without making a mess or drowning insects.

Fluker's

Fluker's Orange cubes provide water and a food source and don't
smell like garbage after 2 days. After 2 years of paper towels, lettuce
carrots etc. I switched to those. Crix now live longer too. A little
pricey at $5.99 for a small bottle but it lasts 3 months. :D

i too use the orange cubes, however i have only been in the t hobby for a bit over a month now and have tried nothing else for them. but they seem to be doing alright. have lost a few here and there for whatever reason, but almost all of them seem to be quite healthy

I used agar-agar too for a year now. I don't use the powder mix(plain white) cause it's more susceptible to molds. I use agar-agar in bar-shaped/colored, you can buy orange, green, red and yellow.

I gave up on crickets, but still use it on my roaches.

I use fresh fruits and veggies for crickets since I usually only keep them for a few days, then feed them all off to the ts. I did use water crystals when I was raising roaches, though, and they were really convenient.
