All I can say is oops. I was feeding/spraying some of the spiders today when one ran from its burrow and ended up on the back of my hand. I was sure after over a decade of collecting Ts and not being bit, tonight was the night. It was just one of my little ones though and I think I escaped unscathed. Anyway, not too dramatic, though my wife thought I did something bad when she heard the profane term yelled from the animal room. Nothing like a fiery orange reminder to be careful.

To be honest, what's the big deal? :? Tarantulas don't randomly bite the surface they're walking on, unlike centipedes. I think there's a major, undeserved stigma attached to this species. Your OBTs do not actively seek to bite you.

I don't think most people assume the spider is out to get them, but to have a spider that typically rears up when you open the cage run out the enclosure it is a bit of an ordeal. In my case I tried to get the lid back on in time but since I was trying not to crush the little one, I stopped when I realized I had its hind legs restrained (no worries, I didn't press hard enough to do damage). I was therefore not only the walking surface for an escapee, but instead it was pulling itself out via my fingers. Didn't seem like a recipe for a happy ending for either of us.

I wasn't referring to you, I was referring to everyone else's general attitude towards this species. ;) :)

And tarantulas do bite the surfaces they walk on. Not out of defense, but for stability and grip. Their chelicerae are essentially an extra set of small palps. The idea that T's will bite just for the hell of it is absurd, yes, but they do "seem" to bite for no reason sometimes.

Fair enough. Hasn't happened to me though.
