Just a funny little story

I'm currently a student at Penn State where housing is insanely expensive, so i have 5 roommates. Anyways, in the middle of September I finally started getting into the invert keeping hobby. When my first T, an A. hentzi sling 1/4", came in the mail, my roommates were like "what the hell are you doing with a baby tarantula?", my one roommate almost didn't let it in the house. When my 2nd and 3rd T's arrived (1" B. smithi and 2" L.P.), my roommates gathered 'round while i opened the package to see the "new, bigger spiders." Then I somehow ended up with a breeding pair of C. vittatus (striped bark) scorpions. When the scorps came in the mail, all the roommates gathered 'round the table once again, and this time we even had a feeding for everyone to see. Now I'm not even allowed to feed my 2" L. parahybana juvie unless I get my one roommate so he can watch.

Now the good part:
I was mentioning purchasing a C. elegans or some other dwarf tarantula about 10 minutes ago when my one roommate, who was almost against me even having a 1/4" sling, told me that if I am ordering another T, he would want to sit down with me and pick one too! He wants to get his very own tarantula after almost not letting them in the house!

I will obviously aid him in his decision making to find a good starter T or sling for what he's looking for. Just thought I'd share.

Very cool! It's always amusing when people get into the hobby after not liking Ts, or just not thinking about them as pets.

A friend of mine watched my T collection for me when I went out of state several months in August... He didn't have any tarantulas at that time... and now he has more than me! LOL

It's definitely one of the most interesting pet hobbies out there. Or pet addiction, depending on who you ask...haha

That is a story that brightens my day. I love it when someone who previously was against tarantulas being anywhere near them comes to accept them and even gets their first. It's always good to educate people about these great creatures.

I showed my mom my newly molted P.cambridgei and told her how you can learn the gender by examining the shed skin. She was only mildly interested but you can't impress them all. :)

If your roommate really likes this, send him our way. We'll make him another addition to the dark side. Haha!

well i hope that he keeps it and takes care of it, but i'm more than willing to adopt another b. smithi. i'm sure it won't be a problem... he's already excited, i already have plenty of substrate, supplies, and dubias. Now I'm getting excited! haha

it's funny, he couldn't even wait for me to pick one out. so now i have plenty of time to find another T... i'm thinkin about getting a Cyriocosmus elegans. I feel like having one of the smallest and one of the biggest T's (Lasiodora parahybana) makes a unique collection.

I highly recommend getting an LP. Mine eats like it's getting paid to do it. I got it from paul becker at petcenterusa.net and it's 2" for $15. I feel like these are a must have in the hobby. You get the size of a T. blondi for the price of a rosehair.

Great story. I've seen this sort of thing before. It's like people have a pre-conceived notion about spiders and T's that gets wiped clean as soon as they take a good, inquisitive look at one in real life. As soon as a naysayer sees one eat or molt or burrow or whatever they're hooked!

Personally, I think T. blondi are ugly haha
I have found LPs to be MUCH "prettier" Ts

Thanks for the info.. I'll take a look at his site!

aww, great story! just goes to show how many unfounded misconceptions are out there (i blame 'aranchnophobia' et al). it's great when you can share the hobby with others, and since you're all living together, it's like having double the collection:D

enjoy psu... best (5) years of my life;)

***That's why I tried to convince him to throw down an extra $15 to get a GBB (i would have been able to see it molt through all of its crazy colors w/o having to buy it...hahahah...although i might end up getting one sorta soon anyways)

***#1 party school in the nation, I'm pretty sure I'm forced to enjoy my time here. :D

I think Alan (my roommate) and I are gunna go to petco soon to get him a heater, some substrate (probably a brick of coconut fiber), and various other supplies...he'll be set for food though because I recently started a dubia roach colony and it's already producing.
