On my way back from class the other day i had the pleasure of encountering a rather large jumping spider (at least large compared to the ones I usually encounter) on a hand railing outdoors. I don't expect to get an ID from pictures, all I can really say it was black with white markings and maybe as long as my fingernail. I wanted to apprehend it for photos but had nothing to contain it in. Looking around the forum, it looked somwhat similar to the one posted here by RMBolton. I'm in charlotte, NC (SEastern US) if that helps with guessin a range

Now, my question is, do these spiders typically roam, or do they stake out an area and forage in it? Basically, what are my odds of success going out and hunting for it again?

The spider in my photo is Phidippus audax so that may help you in your search for info. Generally, Jumping Spiders (Family Salticidae) are somewhat nomadic, in that they are active hunters and do not stay put in a web. So, they do move around quite a bit, but, due to their small size, we're not talking any great distances here...
Cheers,
