Hey all,

I was hoping I could get some help with an ID. I captured this (probable) giant female black jumper. She is hugely fat, so im hoping shes full of eggs. :)

All help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

Looks like a Phiddipus audax, aka Daring Jumping Spider.

I have one myself, and they're great fun to watch stalk and pounce on their prey. And she indeed looks to be gravid with eggs. Lucky you, my female ate the male when I introduced him. :(

When I've found females with egg sacs in the wild in the past, it was in a rolled up leaf of a house plant that I'd brought in. Maybe you could get a large silk leaf and roll it up and hot glue it to the side of something to see if she'll go in and make a sac for ya.

Hi,

That was quick!

Thanks much for the help. Ill do as you say and put some fake leaves, ect. in with her. Ill keep ya'll updated if she makes a sac or not.

Can you post pics of enclosures that you use for your jumpers?

Thanks,
Andrew

i was given a daring/bold jumper yesterday, i baught a couple 1/4" crickets and the little 1/4 inch spider ate one with no problem. i keep it in a small kritter keeper with a paper tower rubberbanded on the top, im modifying the kk top with smaller holes so it cant escape. i have an inch of substrate.

does anyone know what the temperature and humidity should be at?

i hope i helpped bananaman

Yes it was caught at my girlfriend's house here in Monterrey... there are lots of areas here dense with spiders, tarantulas and scorps... if you ever come down here give me a call, we'll go around hunting :p

Hmmm, I thought P. audax was only found in the southeastern US. :?

Looks Audax. I'm definitely giving her the porker award. I'm envious. All my 'moms' are lyniphids. While their romantic life is rather sweet, they certainly don't have the class of jumpers.

Question guys...
How often should I feed it? As you can see from the pics it grabbed a large cricket, but I found it *seemingly* intact on the ground... Im guessing it must have eaten something, problably cant eat a lot...

When should I throw in another cricket? Thanks...

well my bold jumper was pretty skinny when i got her, she pigged out on one cricket then ignored any other ones for a day or two, and just today she scarfed down two crickets and a huge house fly.

i say you try feeding it once or twice a week, if not once, they are small animals and they hunt fairly large prey for their size. ive been feeding mine alot only because he abdomen is extremely shriveled, its been growing slowly with every meal though.

what you may be finding after feeding is the outer shell left behind, to my knowledge spiders dont eat the exoskeleton, only the juicey insides. i may be wrong.

btw, any one know how big a bold jumper will get?
