These roaches are crazy! Sure they are more nurishing for my T and easier to breed (and quieter) but god, they climb all over the place! Im kind scared of one escaping and breding inside my rented student house...

How does everyone else find keeping roaches for food? Im a little scared about escapees...

All the way around the top of the enclosure, put about a 2" strip of vasoline. This will keep them in the enclosure.

Yeah, you have to keep the rim of the tank greased or get a species that doesn't climb or fly. Immortal Sin and I both found that Nauphoeta cinerea seemed to die outside of the warm conditions of our spider rooms. Never had any infestations anyway, even though I had a few clever escapees.

use vaseline because i know for a fact that escapees of Nauphoeta cinerea (Lobster Roaches) will settle in quite nicely in a centrally heated kitchen in your area, i know coz i lived in Selby and had a fun, fun time getting rid of them out of my house :D

I agree with galeogirl.
I had escapes of Blaberus giganteus, Gromphadorhina portentosa and now some Nauphoeta cinerea.
I was able to recapture some of them but rest died. Outside tank it is to dry for them and there is not enough food for them. So don't worry :D

...the most exciting thing is trying to recapture escaping Poecilotheria regalis.

Roaches

I have 30,000 roaches in my room the it always 80+, and they don't even survive in their without moisture. Lobsters are quick breeders, but not a good starter roach. Blaptica dubia and Blaberus discoidalis are both good starters. My website www.blaberus.com should be up in a week or so with pictures, caresheets, F.A.Q., and more. Just need to find a way to stop traveling and get home to finish it.

Why do you think that lobster is not good as a starter roach? This one is probably the easiest in keeping and breeding that I ever had - it is very difficult to kill their colony (not as crickets or other roaches).
I agree with you that Blaptica and Blaberus are also easy to keep, but they grow and breed much slower than Nauphoeta cinerea (if you need smaller species, of course).

Possibly James was referring to the escape factor of raising the lobsters?
They are escape artists & excellent climbers. They are more difficult to clean
& not have escapees while cleaning the lobsters.

I know that this is what kept me away from the lobsters. With my fumble
fingers, I probably would have a better colony outside of the container than
inside & would also have more vaseline on me than on the rim of the tub. :p {D
