Finally some pics - however crude - of the species of order Amblypygi we have present in the Bahamas.
Very common here; this one was found clinging to a rock in a swath of woods not 50 feet from our living quarters.
This one has done very well in captivity and I'm pleased to have observed a successful first molting. These photos were taken shortly afterward, while the carapace was still very new - the blue-black coloration suprised me. When I originally obtained it, the color was deep brown with bronze pedipalp.
As it got closer to molt, the pedipalp turned a lighter brown, almost tan.
Now, as seen in the pictures, the new carapace and pincers are steely blue.
So far I have not been able to see close enough to this critter in order to make out any eyes - may be the species with no eyes.
Certainly if there are any present they are very, very small.
Anyone else keep these as pets?
Could use some feedback on their diet.
