I don't think it's his. This picture has gone around many message boards a few months back and I think it was taken in Fl.

I think the spider is real, but the pic may be doctored :)
looks like some sort of huntsman...
mine look just like that although not quite as large ;)

that thing has to be at least a foot across. that could not be a real pic...could it?

I think it's a matter of perspective :)
I'm pretty certain the T is only about 5-7" (still impressive), and maybe the clock was extra tiny to make the spider seem much larger...
or maybe not!

ya know now that you mention it, those clocks are only about 7-8 inches across and its legs don't stick out that much so yeah its not really as big as I thought. but still I wouldn't want to run into it on a bad day.

Hmm....yeah, I dont think its real. You can sorta see that the legs dont exactly look in perspective. It might be a little photoshop job, or a spider id like to have.

Either way, its a cool picture. It would make a good holiday card.

I doubt it's photoshopped. The spider is a Heteropoda, probably venatoria. I have kept adult specimens of these and have a juvie now. They get pretty damn big, average 5" legspans.
Another thing about them, they are frikkin F-A-S-T! FF-AA-SS-TT!!
Makes 'em a ton of laughs when transferring them, feeding them, changing water, breathing etc.. They have a really bad habit of teleporting out of any opening in the enclosure you may attempt to access for maintenance.
It would be very interesting to live where they are free roaming. I'd probably sleep a lot less. LOL

I have a 2" H venatoria juvenile and I have to agree with Atrax. It's one of the fastest spiders I've ever delt with. And from what I've heard, they have a pretty nasty venom and very painful bite? Does anyone know anything about that?

I would say Holconia immanis, a australian sparrasid.
Not dangerous for humans as far as I know, same goes for Heteropoda.

I was just checking the markings on my H venatoria and it doesn't resemble the pic. Good chance Lelle is correct.

Here's some pics of H. venatoria in this thread...
