TL;DR is the cork bark in the enclosure safe for a geniculata? Won't she get squashed?

  • I am trying to rehouse my A. Geniculata after she molted. I still have to wait for her to harden around 4 days just to be safe. She is getting her killer behaviour slowly tho. She is around 4cm of BL right now with her abdomen being small.

  • In her last enclosure she seemed to have too much soil and I gave her a hide and she just pushed trash inside, needless to say she doesn't like to burrow. Now I know.

  • I made her new enclosure and I like how it looks, finally got my hands on cork bark and some other stuff. My question is, is it safe for the cork bark to be there standing like that. It's not anchored in the soil much, it's not glued to the bottom either. I know she likes to push dirt around and make her own design.

  • Can the bark just fall on her, squashing her? It looks safe enough to me but I'm not so sure how she will behave and maybe she will like that place behind since I plan on keeping that side dry and the other more moist.

  • Ah yes it's for my comfort of opening as well. The opening now is pretty scary with her enormous appetite and the box is very low and clipped on 4 sides. The new one has a split opening and is easy to open.

You have too much stuff in there - I’d never use that stuff, makes it easy for prey to hide

also looks like that “moss” is dyed green and red- that’s a huge NO for me- chemicals

Yeah, it looks good EXCEPT that moss...get it outta there, at LEAST the dyed stuff. One end with a lil' extra dirt never hurt nobody, & she might like to excavate.

Prey will never hide here since she eats anything that moves. I will remove some of the roots since there is tooany of them.

She doesn't like hiding at all not under dirt not under bark. The reindeer moss is dyed with pet safe grade dye. But I asked about the bark if it's gonna squash her or not...

Mine is out & about nearly 100% of the time too. I keep her cage bare bones. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the soil is built up a bit on the end with the cork bark, & that's where she retreats to molt, & even eat sometimes (gave her a horn work for the first time, & she dragged it down there to eat); she's actually got herself a neat little lair under there, LoL. Just know that that moss is for YOU, not your spider.

Suggest putting a water bowl in the corner
Holy moly, yes...it ABSOLUTELY needs a water dish.

the stringy stuff is jut gonna impede the T from moving around and possibly prevent it from finding that hide. I'm not big on decoration because in most cases all it does is limit the Ts space. I'm gonna agree with all the other posters here.
Add a water dish. Angle the cork bark more and reverse the way it faces. Make sure it is supported, that way her entrance isn't around back.

My set up is similar with a slightly bigger hide. My big ole Gal is quite happy there, here she is climbing her hide to get on top

GORGEOUS.
I'm an arboreal guy, but these guys have SO much personality.

My wife was always wary of the Ts, but they grew on her. She is also difficult to shop for as she never wants anything (I am very lucky) but one Mother's Day many years ago she said "I actually know what I want" and it was a geniculata. We have raised her from a sling and she is the biggest T in our collection.

I purged all but her, & a Phormictopus that I've decided to keep because it's just so beautiful. I was actually trying to find a home for the latter for a while, but it was predetermined that the geniculata was staying wholly at my girl's request, LoL. She called it on this one, for sure ..

Does your A. phormictopus have the good purple tint? They can be so lovely

Yeah, man... purple & pink, with greyish legs, she's spectacular....& An absolute asshole, LoL. She only comes out in the wee hours SOMETIMES, I don't have any good pics of her, but she is a sight to behold. It's one of those 'sp Dominican purple's numbers.

By the by, I call ALL my spiders "she." I don't know how to see most of them, & I'm never able to get a molt in adequate condition for querry here

Right because all pet things happen exactly the way we want them to happen 100% of the time - 🤮🙄

I second angling the cork bark as Matt man said and third the water dish. That is a requirement to me. (Mine is in the back, left, but the plant is hiding it. Hide is behind and under that plant, too). I don’t do spartan cages, but don’t make hiding places either.

Up until about 4" or so my Genic stayed burrowed. Now she's out all the time. I'd say at that size just make sure to provide a good amount of soil for burrowing, a simple cork hide and a nice water dish. As Viper mentioned, providing too much moss or enclosure fixtures can be a pain for maintaining the cage and your T getting to the prey. Your T will appreciate a simple setup because they will outgrow it quickly and its more space for them to stretch out.

I always ask myself "Am I designing this for me, or the T?" and when I think the T, my set ups are always simpler

Lol exactly. My T's always end up rearranging and turning the place into a disaster.

They don’t have to be mutually exclusive. I love the way it looks, but designed this one for him specifically with the Amazon basin in mind, as well as observations of him in his previous enclosure. He frequently sits on his moss, both on top of and under his plant, more on his hide than in his hide, climbs along the branch and molted in the lower level between the moss and his hide. He hasn’t ripped up nor rearranged a thing (including his water dish).

Lol, many of my T's are happier in sterilites imo... If T's could be happy. They like the cover that other sterilites stacked on top of them provide. Thats anectdotal of course. If it's a birdeater, their getting a hide and a large water dish. The luxury i provide is reptisoil, some moss, and an abundance of feeders 😆 If you have too many obstructions in the way, you can't get a glimpse of your tarantula playing whack a mole with crickets
