All tarantulas are spiders, not all spider are tarantulas....

Really good question!!! You can see what a challenge it is by how many answers are not to the point. It's a tough one to answer. D'jager is right. Strange distinction it is but there you have it.

You can always tell something by how it is classified. When the Genus is followed by "sp" you know the powers that be have not even classified it exactly either!

Carry on!

Yes all tarantulas are spiders. You can see this one has the very distinctive spinnerettes that trapdoors etc don't have.

All tarantulas are spiders
All geese are birds
Some tarantulas are "birdspiders"
So, that can ONLY mean that tarantulas are actually geese, right?

Um...nevermind...:wall: :?

"Tarantulas are spiders but not "true spiders" which i think is an unfortunate term."

I wonder if it would have been better to call 'true spiders' 'regular spiders' instead to minimise confusion. The term 'true spider' seems to almost suggest that tarantulas are false (pseudo) spiders but that is not really the case.

That would depend on your definition of 'spider'. True spiders are much more advanced then tarantulas, by evolutionary standards, and therefore represent the pinnacle of their line. Whereas tarantulas and other mygalmorphs are the more 'basic'.

Kind of like the little sharks you see in fishtanks, and the ones you see in the ocean you think of as 'real' sharks.

GoTerps said:
It is Metriopelma sp. "Estado Trujillo".

I was lucky enough to get an eggsac from this species back in 2006.

Eric
Wow, Eric you are lucky! Those Metriopelmas are the most gorgeous spiders, I mean tarantulas  , that I have ever seen. I was so sad when mine died.
Is it correct to use the term "dwarf species".

I disagree with some statements, and agree with others, but I'm not going to go into any details for arguments sake. But I agree with GoTerps.
