Depends how you define "safe to handle". The spider is certainly most at risk. If you get bit...then she gets flung and killed, more dangerous for her then anything.

Its like driving with no seat belt. There a good chance nothing will happen but if something does then its going to be very bad.

And, more importantly, there’s really nothing to be gained. A little excitement maybe, but it’s a great risk for a small reward.

I couldnt agree more. The onlu reason to handle T's is so you can tell all your buddies that you are a bad**s.

Aside from the fact that it’s generally frowned upon to handle any T, if you were dead set on handling one, this wouldn’t be the best choice as they are less docile than others.

Depends on the tarantula, some aren't as docile as others.

Safe for whom?

For you: for the most part, yes. I mean, you can get bitten or haired, but who cares.

For the tarantula: No. There are quite a few scenarios in which the tarantula ends up dead, being dropped, flung away, got spooken and fell off your hand... I'm not even being very creative here.

Not even a good troll. That same photo is found everywhere from Pinterest to Flickr.

@AphonopelmaTX, want to help out here?

EDIT: Was my photo deleted?

Thank you loving Arachnofriends, I only have a spiderling about the size of a quarter. I did find that photo on google. Sorry if I used it without peoples permissions. I was just asking for when it grows up. Your input was very helpful, I now know it would be an even greater risk for the tarantula. I am still pretty new to this after only having my tarantula for about 2 months. I looked up the word hobbyist, mainly because lots of people were saying that. I guess it means the spiders are just for show tho. Well, I guess I can bring it in its future cage to family gatherings and scare the crap out of my mother who hates spiders. Pretty bad**s I guess.

I wouldn't do that if I were you, it is irresponsible and might get your tarantula killed in the process. People get enough flack as it is for keeping them, the hobby doesn't need somebody to worsen the reputation of the hobbyists who enjoy keeping arachnids to the general public.

Please, reconsider being a responsible owner and not using the tarantula to frighten your mom. If you can't, then I would recommend you look into a different hobby. Tarantulas are fragile, living creatures that are venomous and are to be respected, not to be trifled or messed with and are certainly not toys.

P.S. I am not trying to lecture you, just a gentle reminder, that's all.

No, a hobbyist is one who participates in a hobby. Keeping tarantulas is a hobby...all of us keeping them are therefore hobbyists of this particular hobby.

But yeah, they are more of an observational "pet" ...much like keeping fish.

Yes, B. vagans can be held safely. In an enclosure that is.
