Dear Fellow Forum-goers,

I've googled a few sites and uncovered a load of information on the topic, but most of it seems to be tips/pointers. Although they'll be put to use, I suppose what I'm really looking for is the very basics; how should they be organized in their columns and rows, or does it matter? Does it matter what material they're pinned on? That is, can it be styrofoam purchased at a crafts shop, or must it be a specific kind? If so, where can these materials be found? When it comes to pin-size, does one/each species merit a specific sized pin, or so long as the specimen isn't disheveled it's fine? What's the story on leg positioning? Do they need to be spread out and in view, or neatly tucked below? ....in short, what is/are the paradigm(s) for mounting insects?

Lastly, any books or sites you know of are obviously more than welcome.

Thanks,
-Matt

This will tell you pretty much everything you need to know.

I'm just a hobbyist though. I'll just give a few pointers from my experience.

The material they are pinned and displayed on is really of your choice from what I've read.

When looking for pins, try to get stainless steel instead of the black-coated ones.

Do some research on the type of insects you will be collecting and how they will need to be pinned (leg positioning, wing positioning, etc). On part 3 of the website I gave, it tells what the requirements are for each Order. What will you be collecting?

As for pin size, 2 and 3 are the best for most insects. I use 2 and 3 for paper wasps (to give you an idea of pin size). Smaller insects require mounting.
