Took my maine coon mix to the vet today for the first check up since we adopted her. I was explaining to the vet the weird way she eats. She lasy down next to her food bowl, then uses her paw to hook pieces of food to her and eat them. She leaves half eaten food all around her bowl...:wall:

I was afraid maybe she had issues with her teeth. Vet said he'd never heard of a cat eating like that and his official diagnosis is that my cat.....

IS A DIVA!!! {D

I've got a plain ole' "alley cat"(neutered male)that eats that way, and both of the Maine Coons I had years ago would do that, plus when they drank water, they'd first make a scratching motion on the floor in front of the water bowl(or toilet, whatever they chose to drink from at the moment)with a front paw, as though uncovering something. I've had bobcats and a Scottish wildcat hybrid that did the same thing. It's a really odd behavior, and I've never figured out what purpose it serves.

Who knows why a cat does anything. I guess that's kind of in their job description - to be inscrutable :p
Mine is being unusually subdued since she got her shots today. I hope she's back to her perky self tomorrow! :(

I have a big old fat tabby cat that does that, whether eating or drinking. It's weird, it's like she's digging for something before she eats or drinks.

When I was growing up we had a tabby who was real finicky, and if he didnt like the food in his dish, he'd turn around and scratch the kitchen floor as if he were in the litterbox covering up his turds

It was hilarious - cuz he'd give us this look like, "Y'all have lost your minds if you think I'm gonna eat THIS shit"

My girlfriend and I own a Maine Coon and it's just something weird that the breed does. Our cat doesn't lay down, but he does scoop his food. If you do some research online you'll hear a lot of Maine Coon owners say theirs does the same thing.
