Ok, long story short, somebody (not me) was trying to see how aggressive my rat is (despite my many warnings to leave her alone) so they stuck a cigarette in front of her and she took it and ate some of it. What harm could come to her? Keep in mind that this was in no way my fault, so please no flaming.

Its hard to tell. She could die, she could get sick or nothing could happen. It depends on how much she ingested.

Looks like she only ate a small part. I quickly took it out before she could eat the whole thing.

Keep an eye on her. It depends on how much she ate. And I suggest you not allow this person near your animals again.

If she becomes lethargic, take her to an emergency vet.

Anyone who gives a cigarette to ANY animal should be punched.

I am very angry about it. And of course the guy who did it was like "Its just a rat, whats the big deal?". Well the big deal is that she is MY rat and my pet. *sigh*, people can be such idiots. I will be keeping a close watch on her. I will let you guys know her status in a couple hours.

So her so good. She is as active as she has always been. I think that she just chewed it up and didnt eat it because I believe that there is some in the turd catching pan. So thanks guys. If I dont reply to this thread again then that means she is ok.

tabacco plantations have a big problems with rodents, so i doubt that a cigarette would actually harm ur rat:)

i'd have also been concerned about if she ingested tar or any of those rat poison ingredients.

it may or may not be too soon to say for sure if nothing happened, keep your eyes open...and keep that pal of yours far away from your pets.

She will appear to be Ok no matter what. I used to work in a biology lab where we gave rats and mice and various plants nicotine. It is generally immediately harmless but too much of it in a small animal will induce cancer. Mostly colon cancer was formed, though a few got it in the lower intestine and one developed skin cancer.

Chances are it was not enough to do anything at all. Just know that nicotine is a powerful carcinogen and very few mammals can tolerate it - unfortunately humans seem to be one of them.

i wouldn't worry too much about it, rats live in sewers and garbage dumps and eat all sorts of awful things. when i kept rats i fed them everything that i ate and they never had any adverse effects.

in fact the only thing they refused to ever eat was microwavable pork rinds (hmm wonder why they wouldn't touch those ;P )

Seriously??????? Did you forget the chemicals (including rat poison) that is put into cigarettes?

Please tell me you are not this freaking dense. Just because you didn't see anything doesn't mean something wasn't going on inside. Domestic rats are NOT sewer rats and people who have this mentality have A LOT to learn about rats and shouldn't even own them, let alone give advice. Do everyone a favor and do your research please.
