This thread is dedicated to Duke, the Doberman who couldn't hate. We found him at the animal shelter, his owners had moved away, but left him. He had been beaten, starved, abused, but all he wanted was love. We couldn't stop thinking about him, so went the next day to bring him home. After 4 happy years of love and affection, weekend b.b.q.'s, silly doberman antics, he developed an illness that left him at 52 lbs. To diagnose him would have cost hundreds to thousands of dollars, and the treatment even more. We elected not to prolong his misery. I held him as he took his last breath, and now he is in pain no more.

He touched our lives so much, showing that dogs can be abused terribly by humans, yet still not have the capacity to hate. Rest in peace my DukeDuke, we'll always remember you!

Oh Terri, I am so sorry it had to be that way. :( If ever I needed a smiley with tears it would be now. You did the world & Duke a great honor by loving him and wanting him when no one else did.

You know if I can do anything for you I am here.

I'm very sorry to hear this, Terri. My heart goes out to you. Although this is very sad, your story is also one of rescue and love and the great years you gave Duke should offer comfort.

My dog, Taylor, is celebrating her 3rd birthday today. We rescued her two years ago to the day and just arbitrarily decided - with our vet's best guess - she was about one at the time. She had been kicked [only 12 pounds at the time] and when we first got her she would jump if you just twitched your toe. My wife and I have no kids and treat Taylor more like a daughter. She sleeps curled up against my chest in our bed and goes every single place I go. Those of you who attend the ATS conference have met her.

I'm sure through your memories Duke will live on in your family's hearts. Hopefully you will be able to give another dog the gift of a good home again in the future. Just as most people shouldn't have kids; most people have no business having a dog.

Best wishes and condolences from Taylor and I :)
Michael

Thank you ALL for your condolences... only fellow animal lovers REALLY understand!!

Taylor is absolutely DARLING! And yet another amazing story of how canines can forgive the human race. Thanks for sharing! I AM comforted by the fact that Duke at least got 5 years of being spoiled rotten AND that God will take care of his FORMER owners in due time!

Better to have those 5 years of love and affection than 5 years of more abuse. I'm sure he loved you as much as you loved him.

Oh Terri, I am sooo sorry about your loss. I know exactly how you feel. I lost my cat May 1st, 2003, to cancer, and my second cat to old age (17) on May 21, 2004, a little over a year apart. Its always so hard to say goodbye to these furry family members no matter how long they were with us. :(

He was blessed to have you as his mom.

*hugs*

I'm very sorry to hear about this -- and I've been there. I was present with our miniature doxie when he had to be euthanized. He was 13 and was my best friend growing up. I'm sure it meant a lot to your dog that you were there until the very end. Hang in there...

hey there-i offer my condolences

hello there, have you ever heard the story about the rainbow bridge? it helped me out alot when i lost a beloved pet rat limmie. here it is i hope it touches you like it did me.

here you go

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...."
