Got to thinking today, we have had soooooo much rain in Phoenix - more rain so far this year than we get in a whole year. What, if any, impact will all this rain have on the c. sculpt population? I'm thinking it would reduce the numbers because their food supply (crickets) will be reduced from the flooding, and that it would reduce the number of babies surviving. Or.....? What do you experts think?

with more rain the foliage will more abundant, and that will have more food for scorpions in the long run, they eat any thing they can get, not just crickets.
but then again i don't know what will get wiped out with the rain.
so i don't know. there will be plenty of quail i hear, at least in the Tucson area. :?

basically i don't know

When I lived in New Mexico, when we got above normal rainfall I seen alot of younger instars in the wild while hunting and not as many coming into our house.

When I lived in Cuernavaca, Mexico, it sometimes rained very heavy. It didn't have any negative impact on the scorpions there. Usually a few would come into the house from the tiled roof during every heavy rain. In the yard I could capture 20 a night almost any night I wanted, rain or no rain. They lived in every nook and cranny of the outside cement walls. I would think more rain in Phoenix would mean more scorpions down the road.

I agree with everybody else. Water is the life source of everything. Rain makes plants grow(bug food), bugs get eaten, and up the food chain you go. I think this year should be good for you, but I would bet next year should be even better;P

What they said.

It'll boost the population.

I think it even triggers births.

The pressure change...

Are you only looking around the house, or have you checked less-populated areas too?

Only around my house - if you recall my goal last year was to get rid of them since my home was so infested, but I didn't want to kill them. Removing 100+ from my yard, many of which were gravid, does seem to have made a difference. For that, I am most glad. :) I would much rather they live elsewhere and populate the earth.

Well you guys were correct. There was a big story on the news this morning about how all the rain and the cooler spring have created a bumper crop of scorpions. The valley is just flooded with the little tykes. Not so much in my neighborhood though. YAY. I have found 9 so far this summer, far, far, FAR less than last year. :) Good to see other areas of the town are sharing in the fun. LOL.
