Ok...I live in chesapeake VA, and earlier today I was walking down the stairs when I saw some spider thingy on the wall. It was decent-sized, maybe 3 inches from end of back legs to tip of front, and was totally freaky.

It must be some new species, because its the first time I've ever seen it, it had 8-legs and the two back legs were giant and muscular, exactly like a cricket's legs, but the other 6 were normal looking spider legs. Next time I see it Ill take a pic, but was too busy shooting it with RAID and flushing it down the toilet to stare at it. (sorry for those spidey-lovers)

Anyway, was really odd, looks as if maybe it was a hybrid-cricket spidey grasshopper-spidey thing? lol, sorry I have no pic but will try to get some soon. Sister told me she found a few in her old house, and if its a common spider, please smack me lol

Maybe a large jumping spider? They have pretty large legs.

There are no solifugids in Virginia. I'd bet money that what you saw was a camel back cricket (also known as a cave cricket). At first glance, they can look a lot like spiders, some people even call them "spider crickets" . You may have counted the long antenna as legs.

When seen from above, they can resmble a spider, especially to people unfamilliar with spiders, as Isern is. I also live in VA, and work in a nature center and am rountinely asked about camel back crickets, as they are very commom in homes in the area. Most people asking are under the impression that they are spiders.

Until I see a picture, I'm standing by my guess. I can't think of any large, native spiders in VA that fit the description. Hope I'm wrong though, a 3" jumping spider would be pretty cool. Not holding my breath, however.
