i _swore_ i'd never do this...but what the heck is this? sorry about the poor pic quality. my younger sister took the pictures as she found it outside her kitchen window. she is located in bethesda, maryland, if that helps narrow down the search a bit...

anyway, here goes:

a little better...she had to jump (the shorty) and shoot to take this pic, hence the half-ness of it.

Krystal, it's an orb weaver of some sort. A few have similar markings on the underside, it would help if she could get a view of the pattern on it's back.

It's probably a member of the very big (more than 1500 species) genus Araneus. I have several very simmilar ones around the outside of my house, maybe even the same species.
