I was wondering if anyone other than me has had or has an iguana that eats mice and bugs? From what I've read and been told they only eat fruit and vegtables. Well suppossed to. Mine must not have gotten the memo.

please dont feed them meat

ok,,please take into concern,,,iguanas was and is still my number 1 passion,,plain and simple meat WILL cause kidny failur,, not might but WILL cause kidney failer,,this is a serious nono there bodies are not set up to digust and utilise animal proteins, meat will kill them i cant exspress how serious this can and is.if there eating meat and nothing else, then u should still stop feeding him meat,,,he will eventually eat his vegies, also he is probably craving minerals and vitamins,,i would start him on a 2:1 phosphorous to calcium ratio,,also with him eating mice his body cannot process crude calcium,,you are treading on dangerouse waters, this is not a attack,or meant to start a debate,i simply love these animals and want to educate you on the care that will provide you with the longest and best quality of life for your iggy, thanks

Just because they shouldn't doesn't mean they won't. I knew a guy in college who fed his iguana pizza and marijuana. He said the iguana loved it and I don't doubt him. Heck, for that matter, I liked glue and playdoh as a kid:) .

Anyway... that kind of diet will not be good for him in the long haul. Try to keep him on the veggies and fruits... even if he begs you for mice.

edit: beat me to it Bluesling

from what i have heard (and please correct me if i am wrong because i may well be :)), as little ones they eat meat or insects but go to an all veg diet when older. I suggest that since bluesling is a whiz at iggies, you follow his advice

iggys

Umm...Yes,you are wrong,(no offense),iggys are STRICTLY vegetarians their whole lives, and as mentioned before, their bodies aren't meant to digest animal proteins.

I think you're thinking of bearded dragons. :)

<sigh>...I expected to see some truly massive rodents feasting upon equally massive lizards. I am truly dissapointed

I didn't know that.

Well since I found out its bad I'll quit. I didn't know. I haven't read anything saying yes or no. It's not like it was Godzilla's only food. I only gave them to him once a week. As a matter of fact I haven't been doing that for long. Like 4 times (Or four weeks.). He's growing like mad though.

I did Iguanna rescue for a little over 2 years. I have seen the effects of improper feeding. It really takes a toll on them in many ways. However the Ig I remember the best..the one case that will stick in my head forever...was a 3 Year old female Ig who was left at the vet by her owner. She was dignosed with Kidney failure she was also blind in one eye. She also had other trouble but those are the 2 cuased by her owner feeding her meat. She was such a sweety we had to hand feed her once we got her on a proper diet. It was so sad but she pushed everyday to recover. She would only take food from my oldest daughter though...so she worked with her daily. It was a precious site. Eventually we found her a great home, I am not sure how long she would have lived due to the Kindney issues but I am sure the rest of her life was happy although shorter then properly fed healthy Igs.

Beardies

Just to clarify, bearded dragons do not go to an ALL vegetarian diet, they still eat SOME insects. They should gradually get more greens and less insects as they get older. When they are adults, their diet should be about 80% Greens,20% Insects
