If the human population dropped by 40% would you be concerned?

"Jul 19, 2022In 2020, commercial landings of Alaska snow crab totaled more than 36.6 million pounds and were valued at more than $101.7 million, according to the NOAA Fisheries commercial fishing landings database . The fishing fleet is made up of a variety of vessels, from small inshore vessels to large-scale "super crabbers" that fish in the Bering Sea." -NOAA
(Does not include foreign registered fishing vessels that directly export without going into NOAA database. The huge foreign factory ships standing off in international waters with their fleets of fishing vessels has always been a major complaint of the local crabbers)

The human population of Japan is predicted to drop by 43% from a 2010 peak to the year 2100.
I would be concerned if I were a Japanese person, especially one of lower means and dependent on the social safety net funded by younger taxpayers.

I understand that's not the point of this thread, though. Fewer humans would be better for most other creatures of our planet, sure, with many exceptions, like subway rats and toy poodles.

But really, @viper69, it would be best for you in future posts to choose any of the countless other examples of how we're destroying the planet.
This particular instance risks giving people the false impression that you're just being crabby. :p:)

Well, i guess the good news is that they're super invasive in the Barents Sea so anyone who can still afford to eat them won't have to miss out.

A family of polar bears slumped together on their float of sea ice, gazing gloomily at gang of encroaching hominids riding nearer on one of their steel icebergs. Mother Ursa, always the optimist, turned to her mate Bjorn and remarked:

Well, i guess the good news is that they're super invasive in the Barents Sea so anyone who can still afford to eat them won't have to miss out.
P.S. Nice to see you @DomGom TheFather! I wasn't around much for a while, probably stuck in a gulag somewhere, or eating crabs -- they take a long time to eat!

Truthfully, although I personally wouldn't make it through an event like that, I believe it could be a good thing if the right ones made it through and the right ones didn't. 😉

No, there's too much people already not really in the west but in poorer countries that don't have enough resources.

Valuable in what way? It's only humans that are destroying the environment. Even the least intelligent animals have more sense than to destroy their own homes.
Valuable and special every way possible. Look around. We have houses, beds, lights, skyscrapers, we can see into space, we can travel 1000 miles in 4 hours. We can cry, laugh, tell a joke. We can discuss the various issues that impact or world. Heck we can understand that our planet is in danger and how severe it is. We are engineers, doctors, filmmakers, cooks. Literally everything about us is special. Just look around. Animals are stupid, completely idiotic to our standard. You think animals care about climate change. Animals don’t care a smidge about it, even worse there to stupid to no that exist. Go tell the imported european fire ants that are invasion and destroying native ant population. They didn’t try to go back to there native habitat when they arrived in the U.S. cause they don’t care cause there stupid. If there is a animal you know that builds sky scrapers, are advanced doctors, and feels as deeply and passionately as humans then please let me know. I just covered one percent of why humans are superior. You can spend ten thousand lifetimes exploring all the different subjects and see what humans discovered through science and art. There’s another thing we can create music that’s full of beauty. I’m not talking about the crap pop and rap. Artist who actually can create beautiful melodies. Check out snarky puppy. I don’t understand the people that say that humans superiority is subjective. Literally just look around you. The fact that you have a phone is reason enough to say there superior. Now you may say that humans are destroying the earth. Yes there is some things that ethically wrong and people shouldn’t do like overfishing that people shouldn’t do but I’ve been hearing this climate crap for my entire life saying the worlds gonna end tomorrow. Nothing has happened. It’s like you argue that humans have to regulate their success to make way for lesser animals which just proves human superiority further because are species is so productive in every way that we can outcompete everything. Every time I look outside, I’m astounded on how much life there is and I live on Long Island which is really industrialized. Imagine if I lived in like Arkansas. Acres of untouched land. No I’m not really concerned about a dying planet.

@kingshockey why is this funny

it just is to me i can i can agree to some of your points cause i think they are valid. but the rest i feel is just human arrogance/greed mixed in with selfishness humans share as a whole. part of the reason why i think we are doomed. i mean we are smart enough to do all these things yet we are stupid or greedy enough your choice to build homes in areas prone to natural disasters . i live in california which is basicly one huge fault line waiting to for that one earthquake to break off and make new beach front property. i dont understand the logic in even being allowed to build all these expensive homes along a fault line. same thing with the homes that bunt to the ground few years back. smart enough to build in remote close to nature areas yet stupid enough not to do the things needed to keep those homes safe. like controlled burns cutting fire breaks etc. for all the great smart things we do as a whole we are still to stupid to get along and work together.
i mean in the end i can accept your point of view even if it might make me laugh or i dont fully agree with it. but thats my right to think that way

So an interesting question is why people do bad, evil things. Know that is a good question. What’s your thoughts?

The worst thing about humans and, in my opinion, the cause of everything that’s bad in us: the ego.

Intelligence is only of value when it’s balanced with other qualities like empathy and kindness. Again, jmho.

Having said that ego is also the cause of healthy competition, ingenuity and invention. But intelligence and ego alone and without any humanity, leads to cruelty, greed and everything that’s wrong with us.

I would argue that ego is just a species of the genus wrong. Just like greed, hate, and selfishness.

Jonathan, every single reason you named is a reason that only humans care about. Can we really set a standard using only metrics we care about and then proclaim ourselves superior objectively? "No" is the answer. You've got to at least define what we're superior at to say we're objectively superior. I can't grow fur. My cat is superior in that way.

Your climate comments lack credibility.
