Solfugid. Kinda hard to keep alive for very long.

What IS their maximum potential lifespan? I've heard it's still only a few months due to incredibly high metabolism. They're like an invertebrate shrew.

They can live for several years in the wild. Their lifespan is greatly reduced in captivity becomes they are notorious for 'running themselves to death.' Good substrate depth and appropriate retreats can prolong their life in captivity greatly. Also, keeping them in a small container will have the same effect, but isn't as nice as keeping them in a bigger container in which they can move around at night and hunt.

Wow, I avoided ever getting one because I heard they didn't live long. Now I'm more curious, but it must take a lot of experience to get the enclosure right.

Here's the thread they're all referring to.

All the conventional knowledge we know about these critters is completely wrong. We've been told that they tons of stuff and they need their room.

However, in the wild, these bugs like to burrow. They need small, confined spaces and very little food.

They also need to hibernate.

Randolf's friend keeps his in the jar on that thread and doesn't feed it very much at all.

Randolf: if you actually stumble into this thread, kudos. I'm now going to PM Debby to make the thread a sticky.
