One of my buddies found this spider while at work, it was found last summer around minneapolis, Minnesota. I am curious as to what kind of spider this is. Does anyone know? Also, is it native to MN? It was roughly 2 to 3 inches long with leg span. Thanks

In Indiana we just call them common field spiders. Really beautiful and I've actually seen one that was well over the 4 inch mark. She was quite the oddity and scared the bageesus out of me.

argiope
maybe aurantia. they are pretty common and look similar to the one you have. and yes, they can grow very large!

no, i think it's Argiope aurantia.

no sir, you are quite wrong. might be in the genus argiope. species aurantia.

say, OP, what's the biggest aurantia you found up in MN? did you find any 4"?
