Hi,

Hope someone can help me...

I think spider are awesome creatures and I have been told since I was little that spider in the UK cannot bite you as their fangs are too small.

Anyway, normally when I have a spider indoors I pick it up with my hands and put it back out in nature (my front or back garden!). ONLY this time as I went to pick it up it raised itself and I could see it fangs quite clearly and I am confident it could quite easily have penerated my skin. Fangs were at least 1mm (and yes my eyes are very good, better than 20/20 vision).

Please can some one tell me what is is from the pics below. The body of the spider is just over 20mm long... I have look on the internet for common spiders in the UK but found none like this...

PS. I released it into my garden after taking the photos...

Hi!

the spider pictured belongs to the Gnaphosidae family.
It's hard to ID members from this family just from a picture, but i'd say it's a Gnaphosa sp..

Harmless btw!

Thanks for that...

Still a bit puzzled about the fangs though... They def seem big enough to puch a fair bite...

I'd say Drassodes. Very aggressive when guarding egg sac. :)

SOME spiders are unable to bite your skin, but there are still many many that can. You were only partially misinformed, but almost all are harmless, so you have nothing to worry about. :)

The "fangs are too small" myth is fairly common. Most of the spiders you find are indeed capable of biting and puncturing the skin; it doesn't take very big fangs.

Indeed. I can say from experience:rolleyes: that even a 1/4 inch ( body length ) C.inclusum can envenomate.
