This is a common species around here (North Idaho) and I've always wondered what they are. I've always called them cat spiders or barn spiders, I remember playing with them as a child. This big girl live on the back deck, there is also a pair living in the garage window that hubby feeds every weekend, I'm watching for an egg sack.

I know that she is an Araneus, possibly Araneus diadematus, based on the pattern on the abdomen. We have related species here in the South, which we call "Barn Spiders".

I think it is an Araneus angulatus if those two little humps on the abdomen are anything to go by?:)

Looking at the protrusions on the opisthosoma, i think it's a Gibbaranea sp.
Don't no which one, though!
