Take a look! Wild caught, 3" legspan. A little splash of yellow on the chelicera you can't really see in the pic. He has laid down a webbing on the substrate.

Looks like a wolf spider, either a Lycosa or Hogna

Thanks guys!

So, on the Lycosa vs. Hogna.. is it actually two different genus, or is it one genus with two names/ name being changed? (I came up with both matched with "carolina wolf spider")

Looks like a ctenid, a wandering spider. Could be Phoneutria nigriventer but not sure at all.
Just be careful just in case.

Unfortunately, (fortunately) he didn't make it home.

My brother kept it as a pet for a while, but let it go eventually. It was his "pet tarantula". :eek:

i would say Heteropoda spec.,.. but that's a wild guess also,.. like Lelle said above,... just be carefull anyway :)



maybe a good frontal close-up of the eyes and head could help to give an ID.
