My B. smithi doesn't quite seem to understand what a hide is. I'm trying to figure out how to explain that it's not a booster seat, but something it can actually go inside. :)

Actually, I think it's reason for sitting up there is so it's a little closer to me and when I open the lid to feed/water it can kick more hairs at me. ;)

My biggest P. murinus has decided it wasn't happy with the current setup of the tank, so it is in the process of moving all the substrate from one side of the tank to the other. It's been moving everytime I look at it, carrying substrate with its fangs/palps or webbing more stuff up. The good thing is that is has cleaned off the inside of its burrow against the glass so now I can see what's going on.

I wish I could figure out why I didn't get an A. geniculata sooner! Not only are they pretty, but this one is pretty fast and eats like crazy! I've also found out that peat moss and vermaculite combined make the perfect camoflauge. :)

Don't worry Becca, all those behaviors are normal. My adult female N. chromatus chills on top of her hide too, even those she knows she can go in it. I guess she doesn't care, there is only about 1 1/2" from the top of her hide to the lid. Doesn't sound comfy to me....

I also have a bunch of natural escavators...can get pretty annoying when they continuously escavate after you rehouse or move the substrate around.

I also noticed a cool looking orange spot on your B. smithi's abdomen.

I just noticed that, too! I wonder what it's from?

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother offering B. smithi and G. rosea a hide. Even during molting my G. rosea doesn't bother to use it. I guess I shouldn't be complaining that they always stay out in the open. :)

I think it is just a iredesence from your flash probably a reflection from something orange nearby? I have never seen this before.

Yes, some Ts just like to be out in the open, but I provide a hide regardless in case they want to escape to it when I am not watching. Guess that means they are just comfortable with thier enclosure or I am just using wishful thinking.

LOL........in my 20+ years of T keeping......most being smithis.......have never seen even one use a hide......they seem to love to sit on top of them though, as if surveying the world from their lofty position.........I now have mine without a hide but do put in cork bark for them to climb over, dig next to, etc........they just don't seem to hide.......no matter how deep a substrate you give them or how many hides........on one I had actually put in two hides & she kept sitting on top of them, alternating between the two......soooo....since I needed the hides for another couple Ts , I took them out & she seems most happy to survey the world atop her cork bark. LOL :D

Have noticed that they do sometimes use the half of a flower pot to sit in but not for very long........then they are out again showing off their beauty........mine don't flick........am fortunate enough to have 4 of these lovely gals & not one of them flicks unless it is close to molting time......then they flick hairs to place around & on the molting mat.

I thought so too, at first, but when I look at the spider I can see it pretty clearly.

That's really strange... :?

I have several smithi's most of them were pet rocks. However my current smithi a female I have had for about eight years spends 95% of her time in her hide. The only time I ever see her is if I catch her out late at night or early in the morning. But she is the queen of my T collection so I let her be. If she wants to visit she will come out.

Of the 3 I have had, none of them used the hide. The first one I had for some 10 years, well it never occured to me to provide a hide! They are pretty and they know it, they like to be looked at!

I got it at PetSmart for about the same price (2.49 or 2.99). My 4.5" A. seemani fits inside one nicely.
