Okay so I got my Phidippus Regius about 3wks ago and as I live in the UK and its freezing cold here just now I was struggling to get the heat/humidity right for her, I put her into a new enclosure with moss for humidity but it still isn't anywhere near right, but the heat is much better. I have leca under the moss and I think that's the problem I'll swap for soil once she's molted but as soon as she went in there she started working on her little molt hammock inside her silk worm hide but for 3 days now she's been upside down for hours at a time like she's trying to molt then she'll just flip over and sit there she hasn't once been out around her new enclosure or eaten since going in there about 5 days ago. She's only ate 2 small crickets since I got her. This is my first time keeping them so I'm really worried. I know I need to get the humidity up but if I open the enclosure to mist that scares her bc she hasn't closed herself in properly atm. What should I do, Is this normal?

Mine chilled upside down in her hammock for 3 weeks before molting. only ate like twice in that span. As long as your spider isn't lethargic or staying on the floor of the enclosure, I think it will be alright. Humidity and temperature aren't detrimental for this species; they are very adaptable.

Thank you. This is all super new and I'm a natural worrier anyway so it's good to hear from people that have been through it already 😊. This place is amazing. I got a male a few days ago and i just noticed he has molted in the last few hrs and he's right next to her so the temp/ humidity can't be that much of an issue. I think she's just having a few practice runs lol.

Yeah haha, this is literally the biggest difficulty for new and experienced owners alike. Because we understand them so poorly, we get worried the second something changes. And sometimes things just happen. I lost recently lost an audax jumper a few weeks after she laid a sac. She declined and passed in about 3 days only a few weeks after her sac hatched out. I tried everything to keep her alive. I was disappointed but figured it was probably old age because I have another female in the same conditions doing very well.

Awww that's a shame. I must admit their fairly short life span is something I will struggle with so I can only imagine how your feeling. I hope your ok. At least she left you lots of her babies. How long had you had her?

I only had her about four or five months. Really was just using her for her babies since I wanted to rear another batch of audax spiders (let me know if you want any juvie Phidippus Audax in the spring). I took her from a friends shop garage suspecting her to be gravid after he started living in it. I was planning on releasing her in the spring if she made it, but I suspected she was pretty old based on her appearance compared to my younger ones.

Ah, i see. Well at least she got to live out the rest of her days in a comfy place. Yes, I would love one or two of her babies but would they be okay shipping to the UK?

I'm sure my female has molted she's looking all nice and bright and I can see what looks like her molt at the back of her hide so worry over she's all good 😊 still hasn't came out for a wonder or a drink yet but I'll keep leaving water near her hide and hopefully by tomorrow she'll come out for a calci worm if my delivery comes I've not tried these yet.
