I know I shouldn't have purchased it, but I couldn't help it.

I was recently in a petstore that usually takes excellent care of their animals, but I was in the reptiles section and noticed in the bottom tank that there was a nice big russian legless lizard in reptibark, along with a gecko of sorts. Then upon furth examination in the hide was a Red Eared Sliding Turtle.

Making quick notes that there was ONE source of water, a shallow dog food dish that was way too high for him to climb into, and that he was pretty much in misery I went and got a manager and asked him about it to test the knowledge.

Normally they keep sliders in the same tank but the water is in the whole tank and they're all around taken care of well. But he says that they did it this time because they ran out of room. :liar:

I told him that I'm going to purchase it because he doesn't deserve such treatment and I'm coming back in a couple of days and if things don't change I'll call him in on animal abuse.

Turns out he GAVE him to me so he'd have a good home :liar: He just didn't want to get in trouble.

Well if they normally dont do that, then buying that one turtle shouldnt make them do it again, hopefully you scared them. Plus you saved it's life. That's worse than neglect, a slider without water equals a quick death and misery, so he will be happy now. :D

Was this at a Petsmart? If so, I saw the same thing while picking up sand for my scorpions the other day.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...sympathy buys are a sales tactic.

The turtle you bought will be replaced by another (although it sounds like you got it for free, so kudos).

You want to stop crappy conditions, then boycott the store. In businesses where pets are treated as products, money is the only language they can understand.

So how is the turtle doing?

By me people have boycotted Petco, and it didnt help... they still dont treat some of the animals right. In that case I say the heck with it if you want the animal buy it.

Deathco tries.

However, they are a large corporation and thus, it would call for an organized nationwide boycott which would be extremely difficult. Hell...PETA can't even make a dent.

Which may be a good thing.

However, this sounds like a small locally owned pet store.

Now that I re-read his post, a boycott may have been an over-reaction.

Fullstop did mention that they normally take excellent care of their animals, and they did acknowledge that they couldn't take care of the critter and gave it to someone who could take care of it.

So...yeah

That may not have been a good idea. You need to quarantine, especially with pet shop animals.

Normally I do quarantine, it wasn't the smartest move on my part. It wouldn't make a difference today, :(. Everything seems to be going fine for now. I'm taking him to the vet later this week when I take my other guy anyhow. :)

I overdo it with my babies. :)
