What is the most basic snake (i.e. in needs and all that area) and how much should it cost?

Corn snakes. Room temperature, one heat pad for basking, 1-2 hides, a climbing branch and a tank about 3ft long, 1½ft whide and high. They eat mice. Very docile, easily handled and reliable. No venom, hardly any teeth at all. Perfect beginner snake.

"Billions" of corns are bred by keepers today (including me, got 19 eggs) so they come pretty cheap these days and in a lot of stunning colour variations.

Cirith Ungol sounds pretty accurate, just don't compromise on heating set-ups by placing a heat rock in the snakes cage. These are fine for reps, but have, and do cause burns on snakes. Personally, I like the Sunglow morph of this species.

What are the needs of ball pythons?
No offense, but from your last thread asking about the care requirements of snakes, and your reluctance to buy books recommended to you, I'd say the needs of a ball python are a bit out of your range. They are easy to care for but not as easy as you might think. Do yourself (and any future snake) a favor and buy a good book about whatever species you think you might want and check out all the web sites you can find.

But, to stay on topic and actually give you a recommendation, I'd go with a corn snake. As the others have said, they are simple to care for as long as you provide them with the basics.

Corns

Corns are the best choice. But beware that once you get one, you will find yourself drowning in the corny goodness in no time. They are just like potato chips and tarantulas. I see you live in Florida, a fairly warm place....Keep a room in your house at around 75-80 and forget about extra heat. Corns do fine at room temps, as a matter of fact, most big breeders use no extra heat source in their cages at all. (with the exception of egg incubation) Go to cornsnakes.com and gobble up all the corn info you could ever need. BTW BPs are plain boring IMO. But to each their own.

Yep,
Corns or CAL Kings work quite well for the novice keeper. Easy, not too huge, and docile. I like Anery Corns myself.
Ball pythons can be tricky unless you get a CB animal.
