Looks like Avic avic.

You should know more about spiders than a pet store; their people get no training on them.

Yea I kno what it is, but I went in for substrate n seen this lil guy. In a critter keeper w bowl, huge dirty sponge, and crickets
Jumping all around. Poor thing was at the very top, huddled in a corner. If they're gonna sell them they should know what an
Arboreal T is, and have setups for them.
I felt bad, and bought it, and am in the middle of creating a new Arborea setup for it right now. 2", seems healthy. Checked it out and held it. Lively. Couldn't leave it there to live like that lol

Unfortunately, another tarantula will take its place and the cycle will repeat itself. The best thing to do in this situation is leave the animal there. If petsmart were to stop selling their tarantulas, they would eventually stop carrying them. They aren't going to put something on a shelf that won't sell...

Eh someone would of bought it.. Probably some kid that would of not known how to properly house and surely lost interest in it over the next couple weeks or months and let it die slowly..

I kno. Good point. I felt that some mom would buy it for their snot nosed kid and it would live a short horrible existence.

Terrible advice. How about checking in with reality? Pet stores have been selling tarantulas since the 1960's and losses haven't slowed them down at all. Rather than let an innocent spider die, you should either speak up and try to teach them about proper care or buy it. Walking away and letting them die is cowardly and doesn't change anything. The animal didn't do anything wrong, why should it die? To make some nonsensical point that hasn't worked in 50 years?

Maybe send an email to HQ about the poor quality of life? Or post on social media about it not being cared for?

Big companies hate when people post on their social networks.

The best thing to do, since Petco & Petsmart are starting to carry more and more stock lately, is to be nice, and informative without sounding like your trying to belittle them. Tell them you are a knowlegable keeper and willing to help them out. They have all the supplies. Thinking your going to make them stop selling them, will never work.

I asked for the MGR and told him if they're gonna sell these kinds of things, their workers need at least basic training to care
for them and give them a good quality of life while they're there. He didn't wanna hear it, but said "that's a good idea" and
walked away.
The poor thing had nothing to climb up and hide, no retreat at all, except to climb to the top and huddle against the lid while
medium sized crickets jumped around the critter keeper. If they don't know that every T doesn't live the same way, they need
not sell them, or do it right.

2 options: Don't buy the spider and encourage the business or talk to management and let them know about the conditions.

just saw the last comment. You did the right thing.

The reason I said be nice, was for the benefit of the spider. You go in guns a blazing to the manager really isn't going to help, believe me, pet stores don't have the knowledge we have in these spiders, and they get offensive when somebody walks in with an "I'm gonna staiten you out" attitude. Tell them something about the spider, and ask if you could help set it up right for them without being harsh about it. Tell them where the spider is from, explain to them why this spider needs certain care. It may not work everytime, but going in there telling them they don't know jack, and shouldn't be selling them is'nt going to get you anywhere.

+1. Being confrontational or accusatory won't accomplish anything. Talk to them, try to work with them to improve the set ups. Let them know your experience or that you're on this forum with a lot of collectors and breeders. If you strike out with one employee, try another next time.

I have a Petco, not far from me, and they are doing better than alot of hobbyist i've seen. They may not know everything, but I've helped them, and they are doing great, and they have an easier time since they have all the equipment. The bottom line is, their product is going to be sold to as other members refered to as a "snot nosed brat", which is totally offensive! Get off your high horse! Are we not all one in our love for these animals? I'm not so sure it is Petco or Petsmart that has the problem. I went to my 9 yr old son school a week ago showing spiders and reptiles, and other creepies, and they were so excited about it all. There is a younger generation out there that needs the information we have, so if you really love this stuff, you'll pass it on or not. I'm not going to live forever, but I'd like to think that in this small group of people, I made some kind of difference in a good way.

Yeah, well... let's be honest, here, Chris. I hate franchise and corporations, and a lot. I'm a (weirdo) man of tradition, heritage and culture. But somewhat i envy you folks of U.S (somewhat).

You have those Petco, PetSmart and only God know what else in U.S, where everything is always bigger (i lived in U.S for a while, funny times) and things are always "at hand" (in certain places, of course, not in the Mojave desert).

While i keep saying that only serious breeders (and there's skilled in USA, now) should only been supported by "non breeding" enthusiasts keepers army -- important as well, btw, very important -- i would LOVE to jump in those shops sometimes for watch the Theraphosidae they have, and for some, maybe, good "steal" price, lol.

In sum... IMO i say, buy, and support breeders, because they are the future, and those people need us. But a jump sometime eh eh... wouldn't harm, even if they SUCKS, lol.

Something to keep in mind is that stores like Petsmart and Petco are part of corporations. At this point, we know that the way they set up and care for their animals is set down by their corporate offices and that the general managers have to comply to those guidelines. So before you get all hot-headed, realize that there's not a lot they can do. Now, you do get some stores that will listen to us and will keep them correctly, except for visits, and like Swift and Poec are pointing out, those strides are made through diplomacy, not self-righteous attitudes and anger. Those that won't change, it's hard to blame them; most people aren't going to put their livelihood on the line for spiders. The minds that we really need to change are those at the corporate level and whoever is feeding them this misinformation, most likely company veterinarians and biologists that mean well, but know nothing about spiders. But in the meantime, cool your jets and just be happy you got this tarantula out.

Don't know where some have gotten the idea that I went in all "hot headed" and telling them they didn't know a thing. Never
said that. I SAID I went in, noticed the T in its crappy home, and bought it. I asked for a manager, WITHOUT causing a scene,
and explained to him it's not the right way to house this type of T. I explained the differences between terrestrial and arboreal
and what they need differently. He pretty much said "thanks for the info" and that was it, like he could care less.
That's why I say I hate these types of places...not including the way their dog and cat "adoption" systems are, but that's an
entire different post. Read what I wrote.

And yes, I said some mom would buy something for their snot nosed kid. Usually it happens, and without doing research, they buy it, throw crickets at it, prod and poke it, then get bored and let it rot in the corner of the room.
Only an idiot would think I meant "every" kid is like that. Don't be rediculous Swifty!! I'm not on my high horse, Swifty. Maybe the one preaching to me is on a high horse, Swifty.
