i gave my h.arizonensis one of those beetles that superworms turn into. the beetle ran into the burrow, and i wathced with a flash light. the scorp grabbed it, then stung it at least 10 times. i saw the venom dripping out of th stinger and on the beetle (at least i think thats what it was) anyway, is it normal for the scorp to sting its prey that many times? or did it just get spooked and was just doing it in defense?

either way, it was really cool to watch that. :)

Sounds pretty sweet. I can't answer any of your questions, but there's one I got for you: how big do those beetles get? I have some reg. mealworms pupating, and I have some supers I'm hoping will soon **crosses finger**

the beetle is about as long as the superworm, and maybe double (if not more) the width.

Wow that is one large scorp! Are you sure it isn't a pregnant female instead of just being fat? I mean they can carry their babies sometimes over 12 months... Anyways, you might have a pleasant surprise some morning when you are checking on them. And the pictures are great! :D

Are you sure that's dried venom? It looks a lot like bits of sand.

stinging their prey

My P. liosoma stings everything it eats. It grasps it and slowly brings in the sting and plunges it, maybe 2 or 3 times. My B. arenicola only stings prey when they get real feisty in the claws. This of course is what I see, what they do when I am not looking is another matter, (up to no good for sure).
