Well as the title says... After months and months of thinking on it on what I should keep and doing extensive research on the animals I get interested on. I'ved been keeping my eye on snappers for years on end... But never dared to even plunge into one due to extreme lack of confidence.

BUT at long last! Yesterday night I kept thinking on what I'd like to get as my display animal(I'm OCD-- srsly. So everything MUST be perfect.). And been as I'm so god dang picky about everything. Not just what I keep. But what I wear as well(sensory issues) and things of the sort. I figured out I'd be better off pursuing more into turtles. Because heck! I'ved had em for years! Even now I just keep a northern diamondback terrapin and a musk turtle! SOOO... I figured that I should go for something that I been wanting to but I refrained myself from doing such. Because it's considered for "advanced" keepers. Because it requires very large enclosures!!! 200gallons for a 24incher!!! (well 150gallon is okay. Even a 100gallon can last for years).

SOOO. I went looking at some sites at prices for fish tanks and custom made tanks and I'm deciding I'm either going to build DIY acrylic 200gallon tank that is like 6ft long, 2.5ft wide and 2ft tall(I think that's 200gallons... maybe more????) I figured this should be more than enough for a snapping turtle.

So now I'm waiting on doing this. As for that 40breeder. I'll be using it as a sump. The tank I will make or get needs to be extremely strong and light. BUT must have perfect clarity like glass. I found out that if I make it on my own I can get custom made acrylic glasses. They're pretty much like glass but stronger! AND lighter! It's pricey. But not as pricey as buying one.

Found out it's not really THAT hard to assemble one. Just need to make sure I order the glass with perfect cuts! The edges must be as smooth as possible(to wield or whatever its called).

I'm also looking through some pages that was put on a few forums. Sadly I lost the page. But I got the general idea. I can make my own turtle filter. To be heavy duty! Like a huge trashcan(not really but something like that... Ill show when its done). This may take me a while to make and do. Because I need to buy supplies first and make sure that this is possible. I'm not going to buy the animal atleast untill I start saving up more money for the tank. Which should be soon! Since I start my new job tomorrow! (though I can only use half that money for that--- since the rest is going into savings for a future house and car).

I also researched their care. It's not as hard as it seemed. It's just hard because they can be potentially dangerous if one isn't experienced holding turtles. As well as it's tricky because of the tank size. I don't care much for the appeal to others. But to me, I guess when I see a snapper I see a miracle of nature.

SO my questions are now. Anyone know where I can get top quality acrylic glass? That has good optical as well as good durability? I'm looking into acrylic because it's supposed to be sturdier but gets scratched easily! WHICH can be buffed out! As well as it's supposed to be lighter and basically almost indestructable(leak wise). Hoping to make a custom lid as well. Any suggestions? On the filtration as well?

Any suggestions on making the aquarium, and or care for the turtle will be greatly appreciated!

P.s. I could use a stock tank... But... Not a fan of viewing things from top view. I rather look at it from side view. You know what I mean? Face to face.

As for handling. I know how they can be. Like large musk turtles(I delt with those). As well as if you get a towel and let them bite into the towel you can easily transfer them(the adults-- juvies aren't that bad to transfer).

anyone know excellent breeders? Someone told me to just go catch one--- but I don't feel that may a good idea. Though I'm going to go look for them to handle them in their natural environment. So I can get some experience under my belt handling them. To test my methods out with babies, juveniles and adults. Don't wanna loose a finger!

There are a few knowledgeable snapper owners there with larger snappers. I am SOOO glad you are researching FIRST before getting one, these turtles are not to be rushed into, and as for temperament they can be as tame as any other turtle with gentle handling when young. Bear in mind though that even tame turtles of other species still may bite or scratch when handled, and a snappers larger size makes that a bit more daunting.

You will need a 300 gallon tank rather than a 200.

Congrats on finally making your decision. Honestly, congrats- I'm the exact same way about these things. Probably why I've had 1 tarantula for almost 2 years now, and I'm still pondering over which one to get next.

Sucks to say I can't yet own a snapper. :( My dad said I can't own something like that yet because this house is to be sold(like maybe in 5yrs? Maybe less? Possibly 5). And he wants me to get something that is not needing that much space. But I'm soo picky. I'm ultra picky about what I like. I try not to make decissions based on him otherwise I end up loosing interest in the animal. That happened to me with an aquarium designed for guppies when I got into the hobby.

I guess I like certain specific body shapes and such. It makes me ultra picky.

sorry to hear that. Maybe you could get a smaller kind of turttle or tourtus?
I'm trying to figure out what i will end up getting. I like all animals--- but as pets I'm very selective on what I get and such. Soo. I may look into another type of turtle. Or I may look into a different reptile or something else. I'm not sure yet. Hoping he stops being so restrictive on everything. He's pretty much limiting me to a small choice of options.... So it sorta sucks. But i guess I'll have to do extra research.

Or maybe ill convince him to let me get the snapper. :x

Well as a snapping turtle owner I can say your not missing much.... and I love my snapping turtle.

If you like certain body types look in to Platysternon megacephalum you can find some that are reasonably priced at 400 to 500 dollars, most CB babies I have seen however run up to 1200 dollars. If you do manage to get this species do consider breeding, they need it.

Hmm. seems pricey... But in a couple of months I should be able to get a few? If I do consider breeding them... I'll have to read up everything I need to know upon them. I guess I'm picky on body type as well because looks alone can actually keep me satisfied. I'm weird I guess.

Though should I be allowed to own a snapper I will decide upon that. I'm still a snapper lover. Even though their vicious and sometimes even innactive. Which brings me to question. Why can't a snapper go in something like a 150gallons or even less? Since mostly they just sit there like a lump. Or so I been told. That they ussually just mellow down. Is it filtration? Or do they actually use the space actively?

Common snappers are actually highly active, mine uses every inch of his tank. They are powerful but not graceful swimmers. Alligator snappers are the ones that hangout in the same spot almost 24/7. Anyways adult common snappers need at least a tank that is at least four feet wide six feet long and at least 32 to 48 inches tall. Any smaller and its really like a jail cell, though a 120 will last a snapping turtle for about five years before it needs its adult enclosure.

Platysternon megacephalum looks like a mini snapper aside from the price I would be surprised if you did not want one after seeing it.

I like the platysternon. But I guess I'm just obsessed over snappers. I would rather have one pet even if it's just a snapper. As opposed to as many that i'm not completely head over heels for. I don't know why but. I always had some sort of love for them more than other animals. Though I wouldn't trade up my pets for the world! Especially my bunny. I love her.

I'm looking to get a custom built tank. Though I don't think personally the tank has to be 4ft wide. Just like 2 and a half or 3ft wide is "okay". Though the length is correct. I'll find some way to get it. If not now-- when I move out into my own house someday i will definitely own one! No matter what price it is(as long as its still legal by then).

I'm looking out for some other turtles. Maybe ill go into south american muskies. Which look like snappers and get big but not that big. Y' know?

I was going to say-if you want a snapper but can't do the size-Mexican musk turtles would work. The species Staurotypus salvinii is a pretty big bruiser and they are relatively affordable now(CB babies under $200).

I'm just wondering where I can find a good salvinii breeder. P.s. I don't want a baby. I rather get a juvenile. Babies are annoying to my opinion. too sensitive and such. I rather be able to sex them and such as well. Well atleast for salvinii.

Are you really 19?, it just sounds a little odd. What about moving out so you can keep almost what you want. I used to keep snappers, neat turtles.

I am 19. I'm not looking to rush into stuff like that(moving out and such). I guess my parents are paying for college and such. So why move out and have to pay unnecessary bills? Just for some "pride"? I have social disabilities and a few minor disabilities. Soooo. I'm trying to make sure I learn anything that I will need for my own and everything I can possibly learn. I don't want to be like one of those people that move out into an apartment and end up having to pay soo many bills that they can't even end up moving into an actual house. I'm working part time as well to help with my family(long complicated story). So yeah.
