I doubt anyone has one, but....

because my tiger shovelnose cat, gray bicher and marbled achara all died in a disturbingly short amount of time, my parents have agreed to get me a replacement to keep my poor lungfish company: a shovelnose sturgeon. you see where i'm going, right? specific care info, precautions, experiences, blah, blah, blah....

and before anyone assumes, this species IS in the pet trade and is NOT endangered.

Shouldn't you be trying to figure out if your lungfish is OK?

Although a sturgeon...that would be interesting to keep. Grows large, prehistoric looking, yeah...that's a cool fish.

you misunderstood (or rather i didn't clarify enough). my bicher got it's head stuck in the filter tube, the shovelnose died of age, and i'm really not to sure about the achara, but it could have been shock from all the goldfishes' ammonia and the Ph up. on the bright side, now that all the obligatory live food eaters are gone, the Ph may gain stability for once.

can shovelnosed sturgeon live with lungfish? granted im not familiar with their entire range but shovel nosed sturgeon live in the river that runs by here, ive accidentally caught a couple while fishing for walleyes. the water is pretty cold, in winter the river ices over thick enough to drive a truck over and in the summer it cant be much more than 60-65 degrees.

i have the tank divided in half, with the heater being in the corner of the lungfish's half. sturgeons may be coldwater fish, but it'd unlikely that they wouldn't survive room temperature (otherwise no one would have one).

I tried and tried to resist posting to this thread as this is a "well worn path" on www.planetcatfish.com where I happen to be a moderator.

Sturgeon, all known species occur in temperate to sub-artic regeons. Most grow in excess of 10 feet in length. Will require COLD water, MUCH cooler than room temperatures. They are tolerant of warmer water only as juviniles.
Lungfish, occurs in tropical areas only. Most species grow to roughly 1 meter in length and can live for over 100 years.

Not a good mix at all.

BTW: Shovelnose Catfish (likely Brachyplatystoma spp. or Sorubim lima)
All of the fish commonly known as "Shovelnose catfish" (both SA, Asian and African species) can live in excess of 20 years. Apologies but I sincerely doubt "old age" was the culprit.

Sincerely,
Paul E. Turley
