i have 3 well extremely taken care of chiness manisses. i am going to mate them but I dont know how to tell a female from a male. I also don't know if they are Chinese mantises but I know they live in New England. I have had mantises for my whole life. Any suggestions for mating and for telling males from females??
Thanks everyone.

Here is an easy way to tell sexes without looking at the abdomen.
The antennae of the males are 3 or more times longer than the width of the head and the females are about twice as long or less. Also at this time of year the females can't fly where as the males can.

in order to tell the sex of the mantid body color and size isnt useful atleast with the chinese mantids, if you look at the last segment of the abdomen the females have only one pair of apendages where as the males have two pairs... the same goes for cockroaches. the males apendages are both cerci and styli where as the females only have cerci..hope that helps

Males' bodies are really skinny-looking, they have longer antennae than the females, and are overall much smaller. They are also more likely to fly.

The females are larger and have six body segments, the males are smaller and have eight body segments.
