I brought home a Pacman frog today :-)

I was in PetCo to get some supplies today and I saw the cutest little Pacman froggy being kept in an enclosure that, believe it or not, had WAY too much water, even for a Pacman! I mean, the little guy barely had the tip of a rock to climb on to get out of the water, he must have been so stressed out. So I took him home, and here he is! Well, he/she, I dunno. Anyway, any improvements I could make on the enclosure would be greatly appreciated.

I would change out that dish, it looks too tall to get in and out of easily. Something much wider and shallower should last a while, since I've read that they grow fast. :) The water should be just deep enough to cover about half the frog.

The water dish isn't really that deep, I guess it just looks that way because of the blue color inside...and I've pushed some peat up against the sides to make it super easy to climb into ;-) Thanks!

The internet is telling me that no, they don't need it, so long as they have a good diet and supplements and stuff. Plus a light will be murder on humidity, which you do NOT want for a froggie!

I want a pacman so much. They're so silly-looking. {D

Lol yeah, I usually allow for my animals to settle in for at least a couple of days before feeding them, but since Pacmans are hungry little devils, I went ahead and picked out the biggest cricket I could find for him :D It's already gone lol.

Yeah...mouths with little stubby legs. Mine eats mice.

Keep feeding it crickets, don't start it on mice because it won't recognize crix after awhile...at least mine doesn't.

Guess mice are froggy heroin

I can see one of those in my future. If I can locate one for a reasonable price here locally. They seem like they may be one of the easier amphibians to care for, going by what I have researched so far.

Now that I have more time to reply

A full spectrum light is not needed, but I use a standard UVB heat lamp in mine's enclosure.

I keep him on bed a beast with a water dish that covers half the tank. The substrate is kept wet.

He doesn't move a whole lot, he's basically a pet rock. They prefer moister soil. I like to do this by pouring a gallon of water in every week or so...so you can squeeze water from the substrate, but not so wet it's dripping.

Vitamin dust every week, calcium dust the same. My favorite tactic was to put a milk cap full of vitamin powder in the enclosure and chase the crix through it, ensuring that they were drenched in the stuff.

Vary the diet, feeding mealworms, zophobas, roaches, waxworms, silkworms...whatever you can get your hands on when he gets older.

Avoid WC prey items at all cost.

Don't feed fish exclusively, because they will die from a vitamin B deficiency.

Great amphibian to start with...very easy to care for

Make sure you get a fdull spec light for them.
No amphibians need full spec lighting. If its a terrarium with live plants and moss maybe, but the frog does not need it.

Can anyone tell me if this is ornata or cranwelli? I'm not too familiar with the names yet and I don't know what's most common :? I just need to make an accurate label for his enclosure.

Timely post!
My 8yo son just asked me tonight for a pet frog (earlier this afternoon we made him release a tankfull of toadlets we caught two weeks ago as tadpoles!).

I just got done selling him on the idea of either a pac-man, a small group of fire-belly toads (relatively easy species) or tomato frogs (with a little help from Dad). He spent the rest of the night reading through my old reptile books and mags for information...

Once he has a plan in mind for the 10 gallon I provided, we may well have one of these too. (He's currently leaning for the Pac-man.)
But ONLY if he stays motivated about it past tonight's efforts! This one will be entirely up to him. I'll have to show him this thread though.

*cough*getthepacman*cough*

So what if they try to eat everything in their territory that moves? That's what makes them so cool :D
