It's been a long time since I told myself I'd post these. In fact, the little (large?) fellow is probably almost ready for another moult. Anyhow, I've finally got around to it.
This is "Hulk Hogan" a.k.a. Heteropoda venatoria, a Florida huntsman my boyfriend and I have had for almost a year. It's (He's?) extremely fast and mostly spends his day laying in wait for a cricket to wander beneath his log, but I do enjoy watching him out on his evening strolls.
One evening we were lucky enough to catch him mid moult. Here are some photos and video. I've never really posted video before, so hopefully YouTube works out well. I just captured a bit on my ancient point and shoot. I think most cell phones get better footage these days.
It's living in an old school terrarium that my boyfriend's mom was going to toss out. It's in pretty good shape, save for a few cracks in the glass you can see in one pane (as in this frame, top left corner). Pretty simple set up, a piece of cork to hide under, a small artifical plant and a water dish for humidity, along with periodic spraying. It doesn't care for that much, though, and sprang out one night, running around the bedroom like a madman before we captured him.
He drummed the legs on his exuvia when he was just about done. Not sure what that was about.
Hanging out. The smaller H. venatoria we have moulted from the top of his housing, and this fellow hid under his cork. They need gravity to help pull them out of their long legs so tall enclosures are a must.
Hardening his 'abs'
Here is the video. I'm sad it's so short, but it's interesting to watch him interact with his old self.

(couldn't get embed to work...!?)
We haven't measured him since that moult, and he's feeding right now so he's a bit hunched up, but leg span is probably in the 3.5" range. I just hope he never escapes again.
