So i got some free OBT slings from Ryan, and decided to set them up communally. The problem of course, is its hard to get 3 OBT slings in a deli without them going psycho and getting loose. So i figured out a little method that is directly related to Ryans unique shipping method with straws. You can use this for any species without worrying about escapes, it makes things pretty easy. But first you gotta have a sling in a straw :p. Anyways heres the tutorial...

You need....
1 or more slings from Ryan in a straw (thanks Ryan!)
A hole puncher
A deli cup (the thin plastic deli kind)
Some tape

1. First of all take the whole puncher and punch a whole somewhere in your deli cup on the side, like this...

2.Keep the punched out plastic circle and place it on a piece of clear tape.

3. Decorate the deli, and then put the top on.

4. Now would be a good time to put a few feeders in if you are doing a communal setup, until they get settled in and make burrows and you can actually get the lid off later lol.

5. Pull out one end of paper towel to the straw tubes the sling is in. Make SURE you take out the piece the sling is FACING and NOT the piece behind it. Because if you take out the piece behind it you will have to push with something like below and i actually injured one of the slings doing this. If you take out the piece in front of them, they will run right out.

DO NOT do it like this....

6. Push open end of straw into punched hole. Tap the straw a few times and they should run right out.
Do it like this... and tap gently....

7. Repeat as many times as needed if your doing a communal enclosure.

8. Take tape with small punched circle, and line it up where the hole is. It should seal it up perfectly :).

Here they are!

So there you go theres my little method to the communal madness. I pinched a couple legs off (i think) when i was pushing one backwards :(. I have a feeling that one may be lunch... which SUCKS. You live and learn i guess.... DONT PUSH THEM! Gentle tap on straw, or let them come out on there own... K!? Do that and this works REALLY good :)! Thanks again Ryan!

LOL i just noticed the pic that says "do it like this and tap gently" you can obviously see that that was the one that i pushed in with the bobber. DO NOT do that! Just set the straw in there like that with the spider in it, and tap it gently and it will come out casually.

I just thought it was a good technique for some individuals that are intimidated by the speed of some spiderlings such as Poecilotheria, Pterinochilus, P. irminia, etc....

Im not as brave as you Drachenjager! my luck i would sneeze when i went to blow them out and i would have an OBT running around in my nasal passage or something lol.

I just put mine in the freezer for about half an hour to cool them down and make them slow, then I pop them out with a Q-tip.

when I got slings from Ryan, I did one front first, and the other back first... The front first one ended up grabbing onto the straw, and climbing back towards me, instead of into the vial... The back first one was a bit more awkward, but I didn't have to worry about it trying to escape... Of course, those were my first ever Ts, so I wasn't ready to deal with trying to handle escapees...

Thank goodness, I just nearly freaked out when I saw that! I imagined myself getting blacklisted for a dumb joke:eek:

I guess I should contribute positively....I just pull out the paper towel near their heads and push the other one through and they run out into their new home. But Jade, your way would work nicely, too:D

The communal is going freakin awesome. Like i have been eyeballing them like a hawk all night, they do awesome so far. They are webbing up and all are in there own little areas. They have bumped into each other and show absolutely no aggression. I have a good feeling about this, but want to pursue adding more. Just a few ;).

And about refridging specimens to calm them down, for adults for a couple minutes on a higher temperature fridge setting it works ok and i have never known it to cause any problems... HOWEVER you should NEVER do it with slings! NEVER! If you are that nervous about it, then just dont get them!

Cheers
