Hey guys!
I called my local exotic animal store and asked which tarantulas they had available out of curiosity.
+B. albopilosum 2” $99 unsexed
+B. hamorii 2” $150 unsexed
*+A. metallica (m. #6) or A. avicularia $60 unsexed
* The owner said “pink toe” and these two species were the only ones they had in the past
+ The owner identified them with their common names btw.

I plan on bargaining with him in the future ;). So, how much are local pet stores in your area charging for tarantulas?

I would never buy a tarantula from a pet store. Based on what I've seen from the experiences of others, Ts are often misidentified, overpriced, and cared for badly at pet stores. That said, none of my local pet stores sell them.

Credible online T dealers, reptile shows, arachnoboards members, and even occasionally craigslist are all better options.

For example see http://arachnopark.cz/index.php/obchod/nabidka/ Prices are in Euro, but is is the same as USD now.

And as I wrote in another discussion:
H. pulchripes I bought two 1" females for 55 USD one, 110 USD for both. Price for unsexed Chromatopelma or P. rufilata was about 10 USD. And my P. regalis, female, 2", costs about 18 USD. My OBT, unsexed, 1.5" costs 3.60 USD each, 18 USD for 5 pcs.

And Avicularia (Caribena versicolor, female, 5th molt) 18 USD

I frankly always assume that an "unsexed" tarantula at a pet store is a male or suspect male bought from a wholesaler.

In the summer I was out of town and went to a "reputable" reptile shop. Talked to the owner, told me he used to have 200 T's in his personal collection. He had 10 or so for sale in lovely Exo-Terra's, well cared for. I asked about his adult Eu. Parvulus and a couple of others, and told me they were unsexed. But I saw a pile of molts. Immediately became suspicious, and left. Any keeper who has 15+ years of experience and is selling adult t's likely knows their gender.

I haven't asked about their Ts but a store local to me has normal morph ball pythons priced at £75 when you can just get one from a local breeder at £20 and under

I got an unsexed P. muticus sling and an unsexed Hapalopus sp. Colombia gross for about 20 dollar. He had 4 H. sp. Colombia gross from the same sack, three had tibial hooks and bulbous pedipalps, the fourth was slightly larger. The shop owner let me pick the one I wanted. Needless to say, I returned home with a female H. sp. Colombia gross.

He also gave me some assassin bugs for free. Nice guy! :)

It is sad that peta had the pet store (I bought quite a few tarantulas from) shutdown, because they had amazing deals on somewhat rare species. So I was blessed with a good pet store in my area that never ripped off anybody.

I feel I am spoiled that my LPS also happens to be a credible T dealer (though I do go to a few others in town, though I suspect that with those, StampFan's point stands - my F/M ratio has been atrocious). But I digress. Those prices... are ridiculous. I could see maybe willing to pay those prices if they were sexed females, but unsexed, no way in hell.

Saw 2 at petsmart. An A. Avicularia and a G. Roses. They were sub adults $35 each. Pretty standard stuff. You know, sponge in water and sand for substrate. I always want to rescue them but I know they'll just restock.

I think the one time I’ve seen a T for sale at a local pet shop it was an unsexed juvenile H. mac for $80. Nooooooope.

This is like mine. I love the store and employees, but I know it's all a rip off. I only bought a GBB sling from them because I hadn't found any through my regular breeders. Paid 100$ for maybe 1/2". That's what you get for going through the middle man.

A hellava lot cheaper then that!
Ranges from 20 to 40$.
I still won't buy from them. I'd rather pay the extra freight, and buy from somebody here.

There’s a shop in New Orleans that was asking $400 for a (supposedly) female P. met.

That included the tiny horizontal Tupperware container with wood chips and nothing to climb.

$20 for an adult and juvie rosehair. Both are females. $15 for a pinktoe. I think $25 for an A seemanni. Hmmm besides $10 each for a curly hair and a Mexican red knee those are my only buys not online.

In my local pet shop they always sell Ts that are twice the price of Ts from a breeder. For example: They sell juvie female B. hamorii for around 35 euros, but hamorii at the same size from a breeder costs you around 19 euros. o_O

Whaaat?? They are that pricy?? Unsexed albopilosum at that size is around 11 euros (13 bucks) here. unsexed hamorii is around 15 euros (18bucks). Why are tarantula prices so high in US??
