Hey folks

I have been looking for a rosehair since I started in the hobby and found a 3.5" one for sale. I know the rarity of these spiders due to exporting/ difficulty breeding.

How much would you be willing to pay in US dollars (just to make it easy)?

I do understand the pet rock / psycho rosie thing too. But it is a grammastola that I don't have and obviously several years old too :)

Cheers

They are not chep because they are difficult to breed. They are cheap because few will buy them. And few people breed them because few people wants them. This is a shame. Because if more people buy them as slings, fewer specimens would be taken from the wild. But with this speicies very slow growthrate and that many consider them boring, because of their fasting and pet rock behavior they are maybe hard to advatise? But a hardier speicies cannot be found

Will my grandkids be covering the importation fees too? Only fair since i may see it grow 1/2" at most!

The most common prices I see for G. porteri in Canada is about $50-$100 CAD. I've also seen a couple adult females sell for $175 though haha.

If the seller waited a few weeks, they could probably sell it for twice as much, because it will be freshly molted with vibrant colors

This is a very interesting question and a lesson in economics. Before Chile put a halt on the exportation of Rose Hair Tarantulas as they were known in pet stores all across America, yes G.porteri/rosea averaged about $20 for adult specimens. I remember when hobbyist/enthusiast would give them away. Now, those same size adult examples I see are advertised $60-$100 primarily because the supply isn't there as it once was. The new G.porteri/rosea I feel are T. albopilosum and A. seemani......they're very inexpensive and plentiful. If a moratorium were placed on them tomorrow, their prices would shoot up as well.

Also A. chalcodes have filled the niche. Before the halt in Chilean Ts, no one paid much attention to A. chalcodes, now every day I see new posts on FB of people sharing pics of their new adult A. chalcodes they got at a pet store. Kind of concerning considering it takes a decade for them to mature...at least the T. albopilosum and A. seemanni can potentially repopulate a bit quicker because of their faster growth rates.
