How many ootheca do mantids produce at one time. I have a WC that has laid 5 in the last month or so. How many of them should I expect to hatch? How long is the gestation period? Since they were laid at different times (at least a week between each ootheca) will they hatch at different times? When do I pull them out of the tank that the mother is in, before or after they hatch?

i left mine in with mom until they hatched, with self-WC Carolina and purchased Sphrodomants (big african girl).

the only problem i had with leaving them in mom's cage was the babies of the african could wall-walk and left via vent holes

i don't *think* i remember the Carolina (of the two big US mantids, the shorter fatter one) being able to wall walk, but i imagine someone will pipe up if they do

do you know what kind you have?

carolina get to be 3-4" long and have kind of a fat butt... Chinese are longer (up to almost 6" i've read) and thinner

and there are tons of truly native stuff that i have no idea about =P

Mom is about 3" with a wide abdomen, light almost pale green in color. No clue about species, I'm in eastern Nebraska if that helps.

So I should get everything ready for them now? I assumed they wouldn't hatch until winter was over.

I just recieved these 2 ootheca last week and I had one that was made in my house. We have been having very warm weather and my tarantula room is usually at 77degrees so it speed up the process.

Both carolina and chinese ooths hatch in about 6 weeks if left at room temperature. If left outside or in the refridgerator they will not hatch until it warms up again. Mated female Chinese and Carolina mantids are capable of laying 3-7 fertile ooths. The babies of both species are capable of climbing the sides of plastic or glass. If left in the cage with the mother and the mother is still alive, she will eat many of the babies.

Just a thought here, not even a very helpful one at that: cockroaches and mantids are very closely related (same order) and roaches are famous for their reproduction rate. Good luck with your new endevour.

my chinese ooth had 100 or so ive given a ton away and i still have bout 20 dont worry about how many hatch , as many will die for no reason whatsoever and the ones that live will start eating each other after the first moult (chinses,,, my mendica are both L2 and happy in the same jar)

i hope you have your fruit flies ready

my chinese were ravenous and even with alot fo food available they still ate each other

mendica are more forgiving

cant tell you bout grass mantids yet since the ooths are still in my hatchery

just remember alot of nymphs will die , most for no reason and ithers because they failed the first moult so dont be suprised

Well it is a WC so I'm not even totally sure that they are fertile. I'm just REALLY hoping so.
