i was thinking of starting my own superworm colony b/c i wanted to cut back on the money i spend on crickets. i spend about $5 per week on crickets, but could spend more if i fed everything every week. do you think it would be worth my effort to raise super worms? are there any problems...like would i end up with too many worms or would i have to worry about them escaping?

what size of container should i use and how many should i start out with?

Superworms can be very cheap, but they grow very slowly (almost 6-8 months).
I keep my "colony" in terrarium (50 cm x 30 cm x 40 cm - lenght x width x height) filled with rotten oak wood. I gave them old fruits, vegetables and meat. I started with 25 larvae and now I have hundreds of them.
You don't need to worry about escapes. Beetles are harmless and can't breed in your house. They don't walk on the glass and don't fly (oh... maybe sometimes).
They eat everythink and are much easier to keep than crickets. But I think the best feeder are Nauphoeta cinerea and Panchlora nivea roaches. They grow quickly and reproduce in large numbers.

Have you noticed the Holy Super Worms sticky at the top of this forum? Bet that will answer a lot of questions! (I have to go look at it myself, again, now.)
