I have a young h. turcicus in a 5 gallon tank, I put a piece of gnarled wood in it and I haven't seen the gecko since. I know the gecko hasn't escaped because I saw it the other night with a cricket in its mouth before it dashed back inside the hide so I know it's in there. However, it never comes out to bask in the heat lamp. It's a 60 watt ESU daylight bulb. Maybe I should change it to a blue nighttime bulb?:?

Most hemidactylus are nocturnal gecko which means they will rarely be seen basking...like many other geckos they spend the daytime hiding and come out at night for food.

yes geckos do not need lighting. Supplementing with vits/minerals should be all they require.

My gecko is the same, rarely seen. It's like feeding one of my tarantula pet holes. The food keeps disappearing but I rarely see my gecko. Mine is an Arizona banded gecko and she is beautiful, all the more for her rare appearance into the light.
