I was just curious to know if anyone knows how many species have the capability of hissing? Which ones are more likely to do it? I did a search but couldn't find a list of "hissers".

my P. murinus can hiss...albeit fairly quietly, it's only about 3" though. I wanna say C. crawshayshi can hiss as well, there's other species as well.

I don't know about Brachypelma spp., but I do know that T. blondi can stridulate (make the hissing sound). I'm not sure about T. apophysis, though.

if so, I would have doubts that it's a Pamophobeteus what you possess, 'cause Pamphobeteus spp. do not possess a "stridulating organ" (AFAIK).
Do you have a cast skin of your specimen?

all the best,
Martin

Brachy's, Grammo's and some African species can stridulate. See [thread=28878]this thread[/thread] and [thread=9608]this thread[/thread].

Correct...it's not actually made like animals hiss by forcing air from their mouths. Tarantulas do it by rapidly brushing special hairs across one another on their body...often on their chelicera.

My 9" blondi is quite adept at the hissing thing! She puts on a pretty big threat display at anything, and I do mean ANYTHING. She hisses, rears, flicks hairs, and even strikes at her water dish, and streams of water that I pour in to top off her dish occasionally. She is definitely the meanest of all my T's, but my 6" P. cancerides hisses on occasion also, but it is relatively faint.

Stridulating...

Many species of T's stridulate (hiss). Which ones do or don't I have not a clue. Like Martin mentioned, it is the velcro like hairs that they rub together that produce the sound. I have heard it once from one of my blondi girls, sounded like a cat hissing. Quite creepy.
The TTKG has photos of these hairs somewhere.
