They have different types of hisses. One is defensive and do it if they get disturbed, during fights with other males, or just to communicate. They don't constantly hiss.
Mine randomly hisses occasionally in the middle of the night, but otherwise it's pretty rare. I suspect hissing is more common when they're housed in groups.
