on Friday, i walked into the LPS, and met with an interesting surprise, a tank of G. portentosa! long story short, i got 3 adults and a nymph (which was free). the coolest thing about them is that they're easy to tell apart. one is dark red and black, while the other two have subtle differences in patterning, with one having a browner thorax and more yellow on its abdomen and the other having an oranger thorax and less yellow on its abdomen.
i narrowly convinced my dad to let me get them (don't look at me like that, i'm still a kid) and my mom just sort of didn't want any part of it. now, my sister. i put a pic of one of them on facebook and she yelled for me (as if she'd fallen and broken something) because she thought it looked like a roach. she was right, but that's besides the point since she has an embarrassingly poor grasp of taxonomy for someone her age and so it could very well have been something else. with a straight poker face, i told her it was a beetle. but i was really worried because right before she called for me, i was checking on the roaches and one had buried itself under the substrate, so i didn't see it.
the orange-er one. they were all together before, but i couldn't get a good shot because of the glare on the tank's wall.
