I received my hybrid hissers from two differerent sources in the past six months; two from a friend of a friend, and six from Petco. They don't have the brown mites I was warned they may have but are harmless. Likewise the pure Halloween hissers I recently received don't have these either, but given they are supposed to live on G. portentosa I am not surprised. My hybrids are a likely mix of G. portentosa and G. oblongonota, common and wide-horn hissers. I am not certain if this has anything to do with the lack of brown mites, ie. if they have a preference for just pure cultures of G. portentosa.
I am noticing white mites that occasionally crawl on them, but mostly munch uneaten food in the tank. But hearing of the benefits to human keepers with allergies, and that they may better keep the grain mites in check? I am interested to know how one would go about finding A. schaeferi, or if it would be worth it. I am also interested to hear if they have been documented thriving on other species of hissers.
