Hi, I´m interested in this sp. I read that it´s venom is LD50=300, it´s true? I cannot have dangerous scorpions in my house becouse there are many people in it.

And what about the other requirements? Humidity? Tank? Temperature?

Thanks!:)

I'm interested in getting one too. Also, I did hear that they can be pretty deadly, so it is possible that their venom is LD50=300. But I dont know for sure, im no scorp expert. I do have a Q to add to this thread though. How is their social behaviour?

LD50 is measured by mg/kg, so the lower the value is, the more dangerous it is. 300 is not dangerous. Most of the lethal buthids have LD50 values below 1.

Coño peri tu por aquí!!!!!!!!:D

Keeping this scorps is like keep a emp. Use the same conditions and size of terrarium and all will be fine.

Welcome to the boards, Our house is your house.

Cheers

The bigger the number the weaker the venom as Steffen said, the sting will hurt a bit but theres no reason for you to ever get stung.
And they are very social scorpions

H. longimanus was my first scorp. Got tagged once, felt like an ant bite. They are not highly venomous and are hardy captive critters. As mentioned, they are very much like emps. This species is a good addition to your collection.

longer chealeto longimanus, when you see scorps labeled as longimanus but has black telson and has an edge on the claw it is a h.laocticus.

300 LD-50 is laughable. i think that LQ has a LD-50 rating of .025mg/kg, although it might just be .25mg/kg, i cant remember and my brain is fried.

I think that it should be pointed out that the smaller an LD-50 value, the more toxic the compound is. (As in how many milligrams of compound per kilogram of body weight killed 50% of test subjects)

A lot of tables take this for granted, which might be what lead to the confusion.

LD-50 of 300 mg/kg is less deadly than a lot of stuff in your diet :)

yeah... heh.
some LD50 values of dangerous scorps for comparison:

a. australis: 0.3 - 0.7
a. bicolor: 1.21
c. exilicauda: 1.12 - 1.9
h. judaicus: 7.94
l. quinquestriatus: 0.16- 0.50
p. transvaalicus: 4.25
t. serrulatus: 0.43-1.45

so a scorp with an LD50 of 300mg/kg would have to inject about 300 times as much venom to achieve the same mortality rate as say, an a. bicolor...
