Herping in VA

I did some herping at Mason Neck State Park in VA this past weekend. What a day! The last one is for pitbulllady. I know she's got a thing for water snakes.

I didn't think anyone around here ever did that (well, not that close) But still. I keep telling my girl we should go herping... and she keeps telling me that there's an ointment we'd have to take afterwards.. =)
after we joke about it for a while, she realizes how cool it is when you get to see things, then put them back and not have to feed them and care for them!

Where else around is a good place to go.. Myself i'm in central va (richmond) but i really can't even imagine finding anything other than the normal stuff.. i guess we need to hit up the mountains, or marshes somewhere a bit aways

That's a big ole' Nerodia for sure! I'd love to have that one-looks like a gravid female. That Racer you caught is MASSIVE, though, the fattest Racer I've ever seen. Obviously wherever this place is, there is plenty of food for the snakes!

All it takes is a little bit of persistence and a willingness to search off the beaten path. Mason Neck is just 40 minutes from DC. I'm sure you could find these same species near you.

I would have to turn over manhole covers and dead bodies though =) YAY For shockoe bottom, richmond!

the best herping in va is the big petstores in va beach! =)

when my little one is old enough i'm sure she'll enjoy walking around outdoors and we'll get some time in around some of our parks.
