i went to the mall the other day and when i was in the american greetings store talking to a friend that works there i noticed something round and yellow "rolling" on the floor in the aisle behind her (she was putting little figures on a shelf). i looked and notices it wasn't rolling but crawling. a hermit crab with a yellow shell and smiley face. since no other customer was in the sore i asked if they sold hermit crabs..her answer was no. after pointing out the hermit crab walking around the store she showed it to her boss wich wasn't too happy about the critter and looked like she is going to toss it in the trash. so i asked what they were going to do with it and if they didn't want it i'd take it.
so i ended up with mr crab, placed him in my son's diaper bag and the three of us (my son, mr crab and me) went home.
couldn't swing by the petshop since my daughter was getting out of school soon, so mr crab had to sit in the spare double-size betta tank for a day and eat fish food. next day i bought the calcium sand for the crab, food and a little palmtree for it to knock over.

does that qualify as rescuing and not causing them to get more animals or what?

Lol..what a cute little story. Are hermit crabs indigenous to California? (Can you actually say 'indigenous to' or is 'native to' better?)

thanks guys
i don't think hermit crabs are native to california...but there is a hermit crab stand in the mall that i went to. but for the little crab to get out of the "tank", off the table, down the aisle and passed a few stores then into the american greetings store...i was not about to drop the little guy back into the tank. the person probably would have thought i took him.

Both are acceptable.

If you're not familliar with hermit crab care, I believe there are a few threads on them in the Insects and Other Invertebrates forum.
